Anyone using a diezel for their brit type tones

It’s funny, I think most of the Diezel range (but especially the VH4) are much more rock amps than metal ones. Circuit-wise the preamps are generally very different to any Marshall - Peter Diezel is quite vocal about disliking the use of treble peakers and bright bypass caps, both of which are...

    Boutique SD-1?

Yeah the Waza SD1 is great, the “custom” mode cuts less bass, which works well with drier amps

    WTFlux....Drive?

Yeah the Flux Drive is great! My only issue with it is that it can be quite noisy - more of issue some amps than others

5 guitars 4 Pickups, Same Riff -> Ground Zero MOAB

Oh there are plenty of differences, there is just nothing that can point conclusively to any causation related to construction or wood. I'm actually in agreement with you that there are differences to be heard, and that they are often more audible to the player. I certainly disagree with the...

5 guitars 4 Pickups, Same Riff -> Ground Zero MOAB

I guess I should ask for clarification: is the point of the video to convey the differences in the room? Or are you simply demoing 5 guitars and noting there were audible differences in the room that aren't conveyed in the videos? Again, cool tones, and you'll hear no argument from me that...

5 guitars 4 Pickups, Same Riff -> Ground Zero MOAB

Cool tones, but these don't really prove much. The variables aren't isolated to any meaningful degree, and the camera mic position appears to be changing with each guitar so that's probably causing the vast majority of the audible difference. Also, have you measured the pickup distance along the...

    Most Overrated/Underrated Tone

Yeah, no it's the exact same amp and cab, but with different settings on the amp, different boost pedal and I think different pickups. Obviously just mic'ing up a cab in different spots will give you a huge change in sound, I think that's most of what you're hearing.

    Most Overrated/Underrated Tone

I’m not sure if that’s supposed to be the official line, but Adam uses a 5150II on almost all of the HIL stuff, certainly on few and White Bat

Which G12H-30 are the ones to get?

Yeah, agreed, apart from the odd outlier H30 that sounds great they mostly just sound too scooped, bright and stiff to me, especially compared to an M25. That applies to all eras and bass and lead cone versions of both

Everyone’s favorite high gain Brit amp?

I personally think the Laney GH series amps are some of the most underrated and best value British high gain amps out there. Thicker/creamier than your average Marshall-type with loads of gain and amazing for leads especially. Racer X’s Superheroes album is a good reference point for their sound.

Everyone’s favorite high gain Brit amp?

The Jubilee has a pretty different circuit to any Marshalls that came before it. Notably the use of a diode clipping stage and a very different tone stack. I’m assuming the new ones are all PCB and more cheaply manufactured than the reissue 800s. Edit: having seen some other comments, the diode...

Pickup Comparison (Duncans, EMGs & Fishman)

This is another extremely good comparison, thanks for the awesome service you're doing the heavy guitar-playing community Jon! As with most gear, in the hands of a good player these differences end up just being different flavours of awesome. I don't understand anyone who hates on the JB...

    High Gain Seth Lover?

Unfortunately in passive pickup design you can’t change any aspect of a given pickup’s spec without it having knock-on effects on its EQ, dynamics and output. If you take a Seth Lover and wind it hotter you’ll make it dark and looser. If you change the magnet to a more powerful one you’ll...

EASstudios IR’s: my new favorite Mesa IR’s

Yeah, I tell myself I’m providing sanctuary for these old V30 specimens ? Nice! Is that an ‘87 then? The oldest 8ohm I’ve had was an ‘88, it looks mint but unfortunately drops off a cliff at about 3k so something is definitely worn out there. The other 80s ones I have are all 16 ohm Marshall...

EASstudios IR’s: my new favorite Mesa IR’s

Thanks for the kind words Ed! You’ll appreciate this: I had sworn off buying any more Mesa cabs ever again but couldn’t resist a prime example with 01 V30s that I saw a week or two ago ?

1987x - Talk to me about these re-issues!

I don’t believe the 1987 nor 1959 ever (intentionally) had 22nF couplers on the bright channel. The “1972 spec” probably refers to the voltages, bright cap value, lack of cathode bypass on 2nd gain stage, etc. As I say, I think Marshall intentionally made that change in coupling cap value when...

Sweet! Yeah Ed’s IRs are the real deal! He and I have exchanged tips on capturing and on speaker serial codes etc - we’re definitely on the same page!

    VFE Standout users..

That makes complete sense and is of course totally fine. I use a tubescreamer or similar pedal for boosting most of the time, but when the focus/standout is the right tool for the job I think it’s a pretty damn great problem solver.

Suggestions for Marshall Superlead/Plexi with master volume?

Perhaps you’ve come across him already, but Johan Segeborn has 100s of videos playing vintage Marshalls and also demonstrating how close some current amps can sound, some very cheaply. Maybe you might find an amp that hits the spot for your needs - without resorting to importing from the UK - by...
