Thanks for the input guys. I mixed up the OP. It's actually the power transformer that hums, which makes a little more sense.

There's a shop nearby which has a Soldano SLO head for sale. It sounds great but I've got one question for you SLO owners out there: is it normal for the output transformer to make a bit of an audible hum? There's no hum in the amp's sound itself, just a mechanical hum which can be heard coming...
