I have four Celestion G12-80s in my Mills Afterburner cab. I found an old 1982A cab loaded with them for $250 and bought the cab solely for the speakers. Not the easiest speakers to come by, but they sound fantastic. Over the years, I've had V30s, K100s, WGS Vet 30s, WGS Reapers, WGS ET-65s and...
I have a sextet of JJ KT77s in my Herbert and overall have been very happy with it. Very balanced, nice punch, good note definition at high gain, more thump in the low end than just EL34s, not as sterile sounding as all 6L6s can be. Not much bad to say about them.
For what it's worth, I...
Go for the American Deluxe Tele. It's a whole different beast than a standard American Tele. The tummy cut and rounded neck heel make it feel like an actual guitar rather than a block of wood. The bridge pickup is fantastic sounding, IMO, and the S-1 pickup switch actually changes the tone quite...
During the process of retubing my Herbert, I came across a blown 500ma on the outer tube pair. The tubes in that pair were 6550s (now KT77s). I've replaced the fuse and all the tubes, biased to 75mA per pair as per Peter's suggestion on another thread and I'm going to keep an eye on things. Just...
I'll start by saying I hated K100s when I used them with my Diezel. I didn't like them by themselves or with V30s. They had a good response range, a big bottom end and stayed very tight, but just sounded dull to me. I never jived with them, though many others love them. C90s, on the other hand...
I've got my Road King 4x12 loaded with ET-65s and V30s. I'll mix and match the individual sides of the cab with a 2x12 loaded with MC90s. I don't think the ET-65s can hang with either of the other speakers. They add some low end with the V30s, but otherwise get lost. You don't even hear them...
I love my Mesa 2x12 recto cab. It can be a little boomy, but it really is a fantastic sounding cab. Very full and despite the slight boominess, it is pretty tight and well defined. It sounds fantastic with the stock V30s and my Mark III, though I ended up putting Mesa C90s in there now so I can...
IMO, warmest would be the G12-80s, then C90s, then CL80s. I don't really notice my C90s or G12-80s being brighter or darker than their counterpart, so I'd say they're about the same in that category. Other than the G12-80s being warmer and having just a bit more character (20 additional years of...
Just to chime in on the CL80s, I've been using their predecessor, the Rola G12-80s in my Mills cab and I couldn't be happier. They've stopped my speaker GAS (for now ;) ). I was using C90s before that and still do at times, but the G12-80s seem warmer to me and have become my go to speaker. The...
For the record, I hated, just fucking hated, K100s in my Mills cab. Not saying the speaker was the fault, but to me, it was an awful pairing. I kind of like V30s and they sound better in a Mills than in other cabs, but still, really didn't care for them in the Mills. I really liked the WGS...
I can't remember the last time I played chugga chugga with my Mills. :D The thing is woodier sounding than any of the Mesa cabs I've owned (Stiletto, Oversized, Road King) or the Marshall 1960 I had. My Marshall 1982a has a woodier vibe too it than the Mills, but the Mills still has a...
Not quite the same, but my 1982a cab with G12-80s sounded awesome with my Herbert. Then I took the speakers out of it and put them in my Mills cab and it was even better. But, I digress. My point is, the Marshall cab sounded really good. I'd take that Marshall cab (or the Mills) over the Mesa...
I just don't get it. I really don't. I doubt people are making this up with the consistency it comes up, but I've never had a single issue cutting in a 2 guitar band with my Herbert. My current band I'm playing side by side with a mid boosting fiend running an AC30. This is a guy who blew one of...
Celestion G12-80s. I yanked them from my Marshall 1982a and put them in the Mills. May have cured my speaker GAS as well. I had V30, K100s and just about every WGS speaker made (in just about every combination) in the Mills before that. Really happy with the G12-80s.
I've had a bunch of cabs and the Mills is my clear favorite. The best sounding V30 cab I've ever heard too (though I'm not running V30s in it any longer). Like others have said, it's not the "be all, end all" cab, but it's very tough to beat and I have no complaints with mine.
I have to chime in on the Herbert "can't cut in a mix" thing. I've used my Herbert in 3 bands now. From C# standard doom to drop D nu-metal to standard tuned goth/industrial. All 3 bands have been 2 guitar bands and the other guitarists have been using anything from Engl to Mesa Rectifiers to...
