That's exactly my thoughts on the Mark V. I picked up a 5150 50 watt a few months ago and love the instant gratification you get with it. I still have my Mark V and kicking around the notion of selling it. I like the amp but the last time I played thru it I found I spent more time fiddle fucking...
Are the speakers broken it yet? If they haven't been broken in yet they sound less than pleasing. Those Friedman cabs are stellar build quality. May be worth just swapping the speakers if the V30 doesn't work out for you. But give it some time to break in. V30's are pretty harsh at first.
The Friedman small box 50 is sweet too. If you like that refined Marshall sound, the friedman is the way to go. It's not over the too gain and probably way different than what you're used to on the Mark. But it's very refined and articulate. Really has some good note definition. And the loop is...
EVH 5150. I have a Mark V and a 5150 50 watt which I love but I really like the simplicity of the 5150iii. Its instant gratification, no bulls hit twisting jobs and adjusting eq. Its a straight up easy amp. No real bad sounds out of it and it kicks some serious ass.
Yep birch plywood is a good option. I built my own based on the dimensions of a Bogner OS 212 and loaded with V30's. A sheet of 4x8 3/4" plywood would cost you about $50 or so from Home Depot, tolex and grill materials vary depending on where you get it from. If you don't mind the DIY type...
You can always upgrade the speakers, but if the cab is made of cheap materials, may not make much difference. Maybe just hold off and get a cab to your liking with the speakers you want already in it.
The 2 Mark IV's I had were cool initially, but after a few months with them I got frustrated trying to chase a tone I never quite could nail down. Sold them both and moved on to other things including a Triaxis. Again, same thing, heard always these awesome tones coming from everybody elses...
Any standard MIDI cable will work with it. Are you planning to run 4 cable method or just thru the loop? If you go 4cm it really opens up the versatility of this amp.
That's the key thing to remember on the Mark amps, run bass and middle low, if you start running them high, it gets pretty flubby. I found that thumping away on the low strings and starting with the bass knob at high settings and rolling it back until the flub went away worked best for me...
Im not an expert on this, but Im using a Line 6 POD X3 live with my 5150 50watt with the MIDI functions and 4 cable method. It took a bit of a learning curve to figure out how to make things work in the 4 CM method, but the midi implementation was super easy. I think if you want simplicity and...
I'm using a line 6 pod x3 live. Works great and I use to get over the shared eq and volume jump issue between Ch 1 and 2. Love this amp. It's benched my mark v.
They're good pick-ups but my tastes have changed. I guess the only thing I can think of to describe them is being one dimensional. They seem to lack the character of passives. I used to really like them but as my tastes have evolved and ear has changed, I've grown to like the reaction and...
Duncan Distortion gets my vote. I have one in my Charvel So-Cal, love it. Girthy and meaty sounding. It gets pretty aggressive and stays tight. I'm thinking of ripping the EMG's out of my KH2 and putting a distortion and jazz combo in it.
