Man that sucks. :(
I have had a PRS 305 for a number of years and always wanted a refin + rear humbucker route. I am sending it to the PRS PTC crew in a week or so here. The mod and refin will cost more than a local guy, but it will be a factory job.
Fizzy, loose and overscooped? Ya, I guess that is how I remember most (not all...and I like triples G's better for sure) of the Rev G Dual Recs I owned in the 90's and early 00's.
Yup. I have a FL V30 4x12 right next to my Mesa Traditional 4x12 and the Diezel is a noticeably brighter cabinet than the Mesa.
Works great with huge, "Wall of sound" type amps like Ubers and Diezels, but I find it harsh/brittle with Marshalls and Wizards, which are quite bright amps.
Absolutely. I would say the same thing about my mkiv compared to a C+
Or maybe a new model Silverface VH4 compared to a Blueface VH4
Now, both a C+ and Blueface are pretty dang amazing amps, but to MOST players you are paying for significant diminishing returns when you buy an amp like that...
If it were me and I didn't want to spend the big money on buying/shipping a new Wizard cab, I would second @Techdeth and recommend an Ubercab. I normally dislike a v30/t75 speaker combo, but in that cab it works awesome....and will absolutely do the hard rock and thrash tones you are after...
Hi Jerry,
My understanding was that the Wizard cabs are now manufactured to Rick's specs by KSR. I read a post here where Friedman stated his cabs are not the same as Wizard, so while they are great cabs they aren't the same. If that matters.
"Better" is subjective. Friedman, Bogner, Fryette...
Agreed, my Mark IV has a great clean channel.
And yeah, having owned both, I would take the MkIV over a Triaxis all day long. I was stupid to sell the first MKIV I had, but the one I have now isn't going anywhere.
Some cool riffs, great tone and excellent vocals...but most importantly, it is a well written, kick ass tune!
Great job; I will definitely check out more of your bands work!
Favorite would be a Duncan Custom shop S-Deco w/ A8 magnet and two rows of hex screws.
Second would be a Duncan Custom shop Screamin' Demon wound to 13k with an A8 magnet. That thing was a firebreather.
The Alternative 8 is also a great pickup. I did a mag swap in the Custom and didn't like...
Custom is a classic and was my first 'Duncan (Custom 5 was second). That said, I found it to always be picky about which guitar I had it in. It could be God tier or a horrible combo of boomy and harsh.
Well....Cameron was playing a Cameron. Most of what you were hearing response wise had to do with the amp and not the pickup in the guitar.
That said, the 'Demon has its fans and is a cool pickup. You might dig it, but it is quite different from a true "hot PAF" (the '78 is in that category)...
I have had Custom Shop '78s with A2, A5 and A8 magnets.
A2 to A5 in the 78 gave a bit more low end and attack and a bit more output.
Screamin' Demon is quite a different pickup: 10k, 43awg wire (very low winds for that type of wire) and A5 magnet. I always found the stock 'Demon to be...
Marshall was arguably competing with the modders already in the 80's with the split channel 2210/2205 800's and then the Silver Jubilee.
The 900s for sure we're carrying that on, as both the SLX and Mkiii have preamp similar to a 2203, but with and extra tube gain stage in the SLX and diode...
The Custom and Custom 5 were staple go to pickups in my Les Paul's and SG's for years. I had the same irks regarding the '59 neck model: I found it a bit underpowered and woofy.
I went to a coupled self-modded models that I loved paired with the Custom. One was a '59 neck with a regular sized...
Probably my Wizard w800. Even though it is Rick's take on his idealized 800, it feels/responds like a Superlead with more pre-amp gain on tap and tone shaping.
Volume up, the superleads mids fill out and bloom more, whereas the Wizard stays more linear.
Yup. Absolutely classic for a reason. And end of the day, if you are after THAT thing that a superlead can do or a MV jmp/early 2203/2204 can do, there really isn't a substitute.
