Sovtek LPS in V1 & V5-V6, Electroharmonix in V2-V4. If You want to try some NOS go for Telefunken smooth plate in V1 & V5, Tungsram of Philips in V2-V3. RFT's are also cool, there was a time when I used Tungsram in V2 and RFT in V3. Nice crunchy sound, but not so aggressive. Regards, Andy :)

The difference is subtle, but my amp responses a bit different in Plexi Mode while on Blue and Red. Slightly more compression is hearable on Red. If I'd use it I would do it using Blue only. Replacing bass pot only wouldn't turn Green into Blue, as tone stacks are localised in different places...

The cap in boost circuit is to me another part of Reinhold's idea to darken the XTC's tone insanely. I keep the boost always on, but if I'd use it I'd remove the cap completely :). Regards, Andy :)

On a schem I posted R66 is R20 and C224 is C20. The capacitor in a boost circuit is totally redundant indeed. The value of a dropping resistor R66 is the game to play. regards, Andy

Tried that in my amp amp and indeed, Plexi mode sounds different in both channels. Red is indeed more compressed and darker. So that's something in amps design that the circuits which use same tube topology sound different. As for the EQ's, bass pot is different, clean is 250K and dirty is...

I don't have my amp by my side now and I don't use Plexi mode. But according to the schem both channels in Plexi mode should sound exactly the same. Look: Red is V4-V5-V6-V7. Blue bypasses V6. Plexi mode skips V5 & V6 for both channels, it is simply V4 into V7 thru 499k//470pF treble peaker. So...

In my amp (which obviously is modded), RFT's compared to chinese were much more open-sounding. So were Tungsrams, I used to use them in V2 & V3. Nice gain and saturation, but EHX were more creamy, so switched to them. Tung-Sol RI would be nice in V2, it's darker than EHX though, but brigter...

Yes, put them in V1, V5 & V6. LPS' sometimes tend to go microphonic, so You got to select quiet tube especially for V1. Never tried them. I use EHX here. Regards, Andy :)

If less compression and open tone is Your goal, I'd suggest LPS in V1, V5 and V6. Gain stages V2 & V3 - to taste, but I'd remove chinese from there, as they have the most gain, therefore the most compression. Try EHX or Sovtek WB. NOS RFT's would be also nice in those spots. Regards, Andy

Thanks jb34_56, I just love that amp, it is great unit, but I decided to tune it a bit. Glad You fixed Your problem with =C='s, you simply can't go wrong with those tubes. I used Siemens/RFT's for a while, those are also great, but =C='s sound to my ear more complex. So during latest recording...

So, the mods are done ;). I changed Treble pot to linear and lowered Presence pots value to 10k. Those changes have a huge impact on amp's response. Both preamp's and poweramp's high frequencies seem to appear earlier and are more present than before. "Blanket effect" is gone completely :)...

Thanks Greg :). That would be great indeed to become a part of Reinhold's gang, but I doubt He'd like my ideas, since they are actually quite opposite to his view on the XTC amp :). He's darkened its tone and I am bringing it back to Marshall territory, with XTC "Setneck Edition" as a result :)...

You may decrease the Presence pot's resistance down to 5-10k. Stock it's a 25k pot, which isn't too effective. You got to turn it up quite much to achieve any effect. When You make it 5-10k it'll start to function more hearable earlier, thus the highs should appear in more pleasant way :)...
