But isn´t Joe like John Sykes, in that he just releases a video and then disappears for five years instead of releasing an album? I feel like this exact same thing happens occasionally, but maybe I´m not just up to speed.
Assuming you´re american you need a step-up, not a step-down. A step-down/step-up transformer is an outboard unit, not a mod to the amp itself. With that said, a 180W amp probably has a pretty big current draw and probably needs a substantial transformer in the 1000W capacity range. Probably set...
My number one is one of his Droptops, just a lovely guitar. He and his team have always been great to work with and gracious with their expertise. Anyone remember when Tom retired and closed up shop for like a week about twenty years (!) ago? I´m glad he changed his mind and kept the business...
Yeah, they have a very peculiar brand of "tight". The tempos are all over the place and there is a sort of cushion around the downbeats, but they do it so well together as a cohesive band. Lots of push and pull.
I always liked the idea of Riverdogs better than that original album, somehow, but it sounds good and definitely has its moments. I think Viv would have still used his Whitesnake rack at that point, so probably mostly Soldano tones.
As an album I probably like Shadow King more, but that´s more...
Twilight in Olympus was one of my first exposures to that more modern style of prog metal back in high school, so it'll always be my number one of theirs. Haven't heard much of his solo stuff, though!
Maiden was what got me into guitar as a kid and I still get a big kick out of watching stuff like Live after death and Maiden England, but now I haven´t seen them live since... jeez, was it 2000 or 2001 when they toured on Brave New World? It´s astounding they´re still out there and doing well...
Congrats, I do love the Soldano preamps thru my 2150 and I suppose it more or less was the official Soldano power section for a while. I´m sure the 2:90:2 is very similar, so it should be killer too. The 2150 has a big low end and the Soldano isn´t super tight in that regard, so just watch the...
Yeah, I don´t think they made it for long and they´re pretty rare but I´ve seen them in a few variations. White and silver, with and without the Floyd, one or two pickups...
Played the Bogner Ecstacy 25 a couple of times, which was an OEM version of the earlier amp they had out. Didn´t hear anything there that would make me pay $5000 for this one, but since it´s twice as expensive and five times the wattage it might of course very well be something else entirely.
Who has made prohibitively expensive four-space rack power amps weighing in at 80 lbs for the last couple of decades? The market is what it is, I guess, more people gravitated towards more practical units as time went on - and it´s in many cases not worth the effort to keep up production of...
You might need 4700 on the bright cap for the real bite, but I know Greg Germino uses the 500 when he does bright caps.
But anyhoo, fascinating reads here, my local shop has the Orange tester and I´m taking in a box of random preamp tubes, old and new, to sort through when I get the time.
I´ve had a lot of USA Jacksons, some of them Select USA production models instead of custom orders, and they were all ranging from very good to absolutely excellent with not a single issue between them - but I haven´t played anything newer than about 2005. I would definitely not say they lack in...
I would argue the 2203/2204 needs to be turned up more than most of the later, higher gain MV amps that get more of their sound from the preamp and less from the PI, but yes, all tube amps sound better LOUD.
I used Riveras for years and years, and they all needed to hit precisely 3,5 on the...
Yeah, I didn´t play one until the mid 90s, but master at 5 and gain at 5-6 is the ticket for me too. These need to get some squish from the PI to fill out, and gain above 7 just adds fizz and flub. Less loud than a 1959 is still monstrously loud.
But as for the JCM800 2203s compared to the...
I think many of the earliest Soldano cabs had V30s, but then again people mostly seemed to use them with their Marshall cabs. But I like the Soldanos best with Greenbacks or G12T75s myself.
Which JCM800 are we talking here? The typical 2203/2204, the non-master 1959/1987 or the split-channel 2210/2205? In 1982 they were all around at the same time.
Anyhoo, the 2203/2204 is less loud than the 1959/1987 but to my ears still requires a healthy dose of PI saturation to fill out and...
