Yeah, I have one of these, I got it back in 2016 or so. Just love the neck shape, and I think the Super III is nice and not nearly as dark as Dimarzio and others describe it.
Only downside is that this is one heavy strat with all that mahogany and maple, but it´s not too bad.
Let´s see now, I maybe had another six months of not buying any amps after my original post here - then I added a Boogie III+ and a JCM800 2204 and things were back to normal ?
I realize this thread went off the rails seven pages ago, but regarding the four preamps Hetfield uses - most of the big racks from back in the day doesn´t use MIDI apart from controlling the central switcher unit. I remember talking to some dude years ago, he was so frustrated with the...
The IIB is a nice amp, it was everywhere in the late 70s and early 80s. Many of the LA session dudes used it, like Mike Landau, and some rockers like Brad Gillis too. Mark Knopfler used one, and that dude has some tone going on.
I´ve been eyeing these low-key for years but never really found one that wasn´t expensive or beat up, but this one checked all the boxes. Rare 230V export model, too, so I don´t have to use a step-down.
It´s got some real cool vibes to it, for sure, and it sounds just great pushing my 2204 and...
Always just assumed it was a Van Halen thing, I think the amp came out in 1992 and FUCK came out summer of ´91 with Poundcake as the lead single. Really weird coincidence otherwise.
I had the Brick preamp, with all four channels of the MK1. It had sort of that 90s refined Marshall thing, a bit darker and thicker like everyone was shooting for at the time. And yeah, the two middle channels crunch and meat were the best things about it. Not very saturated overall, even on the...
OK, if they´re really close that could very well be the issue. I´ve always thought EMGs biggest mistake was telling everyone the pickups basically should kiss the strings, that´s probably why a lot of people write them off as overly hot and bloated. If you ask them today they recommend setting...
Are you setting these way up to the strings? In my experience EMGs do sound like a mushy mess if you treat them any different from a passive pickup, even if they can go closer without stratitis.
Thanks! It's pretty clean cosmetically considering it turns 40 next year, just one bigger tear in the tolex on the right side, but more importantly it has a clean bill of health, is recently tuned up and has fresh tubes. Should be good to go for decades more.
Played it a bunch over the weekend, and I think I am digging it more paired with the G12M25 greenback sound. That´s where my ears tend to go these days, so no surprise, but the G12T75 is a very viable option and still the more typical 800 sound for me personally.
A less widely known option are the N-audio switchers, I´ve had a prototype rack version of his small dual switcher for five years with no issues. Can´t say if it´s any better than some of these others, but might be worth checking out.
He had at least six of them, a couple of years ago the keyboard player for some opening act on the 5150 tour shared a backstage pic with a whole rack full of them. Sorry for the lousy pic, I took a shot of my TV to send to a buddy.
Only got one of those, but it might even be from the same year. Greco RR95K with Dimarzio Virtual Hot PAF and PAF 59 neck, sounds amazing thru the 2204 just like you say.
Yeah, no mods going into this one, I have plenty of stuff that does that kind of thing already so this is staying stock. I have some nice options for boosting it, but honestly I´m digging it a lot just straight in as well. Not really a metal guy, I guess, more sort of 80s rock.
