yeah it's the pickups(they are a very small part) & not the Multiple EQ's & outboard gear he had hooked up. take any of that away & the sound changes.

EMG Confirmed they changed the Preamp. It was even on their website at one time. Google is your friend.

The 80's and 90's ones are smoother, less trebly. They are a little warmer & have a slight bit more bottom end.

No. Because the Solderless didn't come out until the mid 2000's. I have a set of hardwired EMG's in my 1996 custom shop les paul & they destroy every other set of EMG's i have.

My set of 81/85 from 1996 is the soldered version. they sound very different from even my anniversary sets i got in 2006.....before they did the chrome covers as a full time feature.

The 81x was meant to give the feel/sound of the 81 with the 18v mod.

Try the 24v mod.

I have a Les Paul that has a Set from 1996 & they will never leave that guitar. It just sounds massive & clear.

They Changed the Preamp in 2015 or 2017. that's the main cause for the newer ones sounding different.

Yeah that tone was a Stock JCM 800 & a TC Electronics Distortion/Booster. Scott Ian still has and uses that amp head to record.

My First Job was at a Toy store when i was 15 & we had this display of Teddy Ruxpin.....i would always put a slayer cassette in it & hit play to scare the customers. The Best part is the display was on the top of the shelving so that little kids couldn't mess with it and break the damn doll.
