I installed a painkiller in the bridge of a Dean (not sure the model, double cut made in the USA) for a friend of mine, and it sounded nice and sharp like a good high output bridge pickup should. Nothing like a neck pickup tone.

The other guitarist in my band uses a DC10 and his GEQ is different than the GEQ on his MKIII. But the way he dials it in it sounds the same. And he dimes the gain on the lead channels of both, and again, the sound alike. As far as Monstatone goes, he's the real deal. I sent my 89 .50Cal to him...

Juggernaut, Not sure if you're into mid gain/crunch type tones, but there is a pull knob on the clean channel that adds a crunch tone...

I never got the whole sounds like a cross between a Recto and MKIV thing. I've owned 3 Recto's and neither of my DC-10's sounded like a Recto. Think MKIII Lead channel, MKIV clean channel. Great amps.

There's a really good post in the "Tubes" section of the Boogie Board about Mesa Boogies tubes. But yes, they use Ruby tubes.

Boogie has stopped using JJ's, they said they were not consistent enough, too many bad ones. All their tubes now come from Ruby.
