I understand what you guys mean by dry or sterile. They're very surgical. I grew up with EMGs so my ear got used to the tightness and compression.
Now when I play passives, I find them a bit loose most of the time.... well, at least for tight rythm stuff..... for hard rock and rock I prefer...
They feel abit compressed yeah, particularly if you have the amp volume a bit low, but once you open the master up, for METAL and tight gain type of stuff, I really like how emg's feel in my hands....
some nice high output passive buckers feel really good and open too, but I don't know I guess...
here you'll find one of the most versatile recordings of the Herbert given the EXTREME compression from the video.

The herbert part comes around the 7:00 minute mark I believe.
I understand, then in that case get an amp that you know you'll be able to sell later and lose money if you're leaving that country :)
just my two cents based on personal experience. :)
oh dude, then do yourself a favor and don't accept this amp...... just get your money....if you wanna record and make music just get a modeler, that you can get in a suitcase.....but don't get an amp that people don't understand the value off.....it's like owning a ferrari in the deepest...
I was installing a tube on my vh4 and I broke one if the connector (the little "legs").... will it work still ? or that tube is fucked already?

I think the VH4 is at least in the top 5 of any amp every made so far when it comes to "best all around amp".
now having said that, there are cheaper options that do FANTASTICALLY in the all around world.
For example the Mark IV is a great example of this.
incredibly, a nice Fender Bassman...
I'd take the cash. You mentioned a couple of things that will be a PAIN IN THE ASS later. I know because I'm in the same boat.
I live in a place where people only know mesas, fenders, marshalls, peavey, randall........ they don't even know what a Diezel is, let alone BELIEVE that an amp can...
I don't know if he always sucked live because I haven't seen THAT many live GNR performances, but almost everything out there on youtube during that era (early 90s) he sounding like he was struggling honestly.
I think he had a great rock voice, but his technique is shit, therefore his vocal...
first of all, I got my VH4 repaired by an excellent tech/engineer here (thank god). Apparently there was a cable hitting one of the connectors in the tube socket inside.
it's back to sounding AWESOME. New power and pre tubes too so it's rocking!
But something awesome happened tonight....I was...
