Some sources would say it's '81 when they started bringing in the mahogany necks again but there's no definite answer. Yours look like a mahogany neck considering how big the spores are. A mahogany neck is probably more desirable for many though.

The construction changed around '78/'79. From that time onwards they have the "pancake" maple layer between the maple top and a one piece mahogany body. Which is probably why Adam Jones insists on using Norlin Silverbursts. Because that finish coincides the spec change so it's easy to tell.

Yeah agreed, while the Tribute has thinner body than Standard/Custom, it's still thicker than most single cuts currently made by other manufactuers.

I think the main question is whether you feel like connecting a bunch of cables during your break. I'd say get a plug-and-play combo that has the main tones you need to minimise hassle.
