He doesn't get the greatest tones out his amps in general IMO but he's great at making comparison videos. Yeah, his amps seem to lack gain to me. LOL
My Superlead and 2203 blow his amps away lol
After listening to the raw tracks from VH1, I don't understand why some people think he was getting more distortion from his amp compared to other of the same type. Sure, maybe his sounded a little different, or maybe better than others in his opinion. Or maybe had a tube in V1 that just gave...
Ed's amp sounded like a cranked PLEXI should. What are you talking about? He didn't have that much gain back then but very typical for PLEXI.
Ed could have used just about any other PLEXI and after the studio EQ and mastering, it would have sounded similar.
I roll V1 tubes once in while in my 2203 clone. I have old JAN 12AX7s and new production of various brands. I mostly listen for microphonics. I try to listen for more gain if I can but in that type of circuit, all of my tubes new and old SOUND practically the same. Very difficult to hear tonal...
The bright cap is a stock 1000pF value. As pointed out, an extra resistor was added to the cold clipper 10K resistor. Can't make out the value but that resistor parallel to the original 10K lowers the total value to add more gain. I have tried this, and it can sound great. I would try with and...
From what I watched so far, Slayer was probably my favorite. The video I saw the next morning sounded awesome as well as the footage, but it got taken down.
Nuno saved the day, I think. Steve Tyler sounded surprising good. Sammy messed up lyrics and sounded terrible and seemed like he didn't...
I'm surprised Tom Morello was even there. I don't think he can even play any Ozzy or Sabbath tunes. He just kind of stood there strumming most of the time.
Yes. Built a half dozen over the years. Go to Home Depot and you'll be all set. Plywood, paint, Velcro, rubber feet and a handle or two if needed.
The hardest part is cutting the plywood to size and that's easy if you have the tool(s).
I tried my old SD-1 into my 2203 a few times but I just don't need it. When I play at home by myself, it sounds really cool but when I rehearse with the band or gig, the amp itself is just right. I like to add a delay for lead and single note lines. I'll use a Boss GE-7 for a lead boost.
I do my own now. My first re-fret was on my 1980 LP Standard with neck binding. I didn't want to pay 400 dollars for re-fret so I bit the bullet and did it myself. Turned out really good even though I made a lot of rookie mistakes. I just finished doing my 1984 Explorer too & that also turned...
