Best "cheap" piece of gear you've ever bought

I bought my Charvel 750XL for $250 and that guitar carried me through high school and college as my main practice and jamming guitar. I will probably revive it soon with fresh hardware and pickups.

So it's 2017. What you gonna buy this year?

Sold my VH4, picked up an Engl Morse. Still waiting on an Ormsby Goliath. Other than that I've been swapping pickups a bit (shuffling them around and moving some spares out). I don't foresee any large purchases on the horizon.

    Carol Ann Triptik, sounds great!

That's what actually sold the amp for me. I loved the model and how articulate it was, it couldn't prepare me for how responsive it actually is in person.

    Carol Ann Triptik, sounds great!

I have a Triptik 100, and it is utterly gorgeous sounding. Channel A has massive range and the two high gain channels are fantastically versatile and responsive. Very tight bottom end, rich in the mids, paired it with a zilla cab with 65 cream backs and that reigns in the harsh treble you...

Bump. Found the Morse but I'm willing to take trade offers on an Engel Invader, and possibly Suhr and PRS guitars.

Best bang for your buck amp

Used Mesa Mark IV and a 2x12 cab of some kind. You'd still have enough for a pedal or two.

VH4 first band trials last night.

I had a Herbert and VH4 at the same time, the VH4 has lasted in my stable for considerably longer. There is something really special about the way the VH4 reacts to the way you play rhythms that is totally addictive. On another note you guys are solid, good drummer.

Best sounding amp for lead tones

Depending on which era Sykes you are talking about a Mesa Boogie Mark will get you there, for the other two you would need something a little more British in flavor. Marks are highly saturated but tight and highly dynamic and reward a strict right hand technique. If you are after a slightly...

Best sounding amp for lead tones

Mesa Mark IV, or a Diezel Herbert. The VH4 is better for rhythm because of the super dry gain on channel 3, but channel 4 can get really liquidy.

Bump, got a hold of an Engl Morse. Now taking reasonable offers. For the record I am located in the US, the amp does work with domestic US power.

    FS Diezel VH4

Selling my VH4. I believe the serial number puts it in the 2006-2007 range. It has a little adhesive from a sticker on the face. I believe that residue can be removed with a little elbow grease and a bit of solvent, there are a couple of marks on the tolex but no tears (you can see them in the...

Best cab company at the moment?

I would say Zilla, I got a super fat boy with cream back 65Ms. It has a similar feel to my mesa recto oversized 2x12 but it smooths out the upper mid harshness and is tighter and more refined in the bass while still sounding huge. Really great company to work with too.

Badass Players With Shitty Vibratos, Vibrato Snobs, & More

The Holdsworth and Lane style of subtle trem system assisted vibrato always got me, it's an extension of Jeff Beck's more wild trem abuse but still very tasty. It allows for a very even vibrato as well, you can also control the pitch modulation "shape" and rhythm with bar a bit more than with...

    Gibson LPC Pickups ???

BKP black dog set, or BKP rebel yell set. I have the black dogs in a PRS singlecut trem and they are vintage but aggressive with the juiciest neck pickup I've ever tried. I have the rebel yell set in an Edwards LPC copy and it cuts through, has a bit of the chainsaw gain sound to it but they...

Looking for a great neck pick up (Les Paul)

Suhr SSV (retains classic character, has good body to it) PRS 57/08 (One of the best takes on a PAF style pickup I've ever tried, bright but not thin) Bare Knuckle Black Dog (the juiciest neck pickup I've ever tried)
