Many times, I have chased my tail trying to find the bug in an amp that was misbehaving. Only to finally find out that the problem was a weak tube. SLO-clone? I highly recommend C3 Amps. Built their 50 watt version. Excellent quality throughout the whole kit!

I think this is the pic of his Ceriatone build. Pic is not very clear, but it looks like the cathodes are hooked up right. Can't tell if the PI is grounded properly though. Jumper wire is probably under the board.

Measure at the pins, or at the tube side of the 82k & 100k plate resistors with no PI tube installed.

Can just the PI tube be pulled, and then test for voltages?

PI plate resistors are 82k & 100k? Double check them with a meter.

Brass wire sponges and tiny tin of “tip tinner & cleaner” is all I use. Clean often between soldering applications. Tin the tip before shutting down. No wet sponges for me!

Thanks! And now I’m even more curious… Valvestorm’s filter caps offerings are CE, F&T, ARS, TAD, Rifa, BC, and NOS Erie’s, that have been out of stock for a while now. Only on the ARS and Erie caps, the descriptions state “Re-formed and ready to go”. If the Erie’s were available, “Re-formed”...

So when new e-caps are manufactured, they are all tested and considered formed because of the testing procedure?

Thoughts? Or better yet: Any real experience with altered filtering with this circuit? Stock filtering: 100uF (50/50) at Mains, 50/50 at Screen and PI, 50/50 at both Preamps. I’m itching to try 32/32 for Screen and PI, and leave the other nodes alone. Looking to add some squishiness when...

That’s definitely a bummer when that type of crap happens. Seems like there are quite a few good Heads here that are very generous with their knowledge and have decent table manners too… (y)

2008 sounds about right. I assembled my first amp kit in ‘09, a Metro Plexi 50 because of the Metro forum and everything else related to Metropoulos Amps. I think I faded out around ‘14 from that forum after the site went through some major technical problems.

Valvestorm advertises their ARS caps as “reformed and ready to go”. Is this exclusive to Valvestorm, or does ARS do this for all of their filter e-caps?
