Jim Lill: "In-the-room tone doesn't matter" and he's right

Tone in the room is one of the most important things, most of the time. It's what is influencing the live performance, by providing immediate feedback to the performer. Furthermore it also shapes what is going into the microphone for the recording. Now in the 21st century we have all kinds of...

    Here comes the SLO pedal

I just received 5 star Reverb feedback from Soldano. 😝 I think this actually represents my pinnacle as a guitarist. I'll take it.

Song with definitive Tri Axis tone

No I hadn't. Thank you very much for the tip, will check it out. I grew up watching his instructional videos and reading his columns, and appreciated he was trying to help us be better musicians rather than guitarists. I don't think it worked on me, but I'm thankful for the effort lol. On my...

Song with definitive Tri Axis tone

Cool. I've been down these rabbit holes before. FYI, the Recto mode is terrible (Lead I Red). I mean like completely unusable. BUT, one thing which will help to get that Symptom tone is to use the old school Recto cabinets coupled with the Triaxis Mark sounds. The tall/oversized ones. They...

Song with definitive Tri Axis tone

Damn I know it. I actually walked out of the DT show the last time I saw them. Only time in my entire life I did that at a concert. So boring. The Dregs had opened, and they were amazing. Morse's solo spot was in a similar space to Petrucci's '93 solo, but on an even higher level. Very...

Song with definitive Tri Axis tone

Trying to better answer your question, for me the definitive Triaxis tone is the Live in Tokyo solo. Mainly Lead II Yellow. The unique attack on the notes, the cleanliness even at the higher gain settings, the placement of the midrange and the distortion's 'grain' in the top end is all there...

Song with definitive Tri Axis tone

It has to be. It sounds exactly like a well recorded LDII Red on that track with the gain and eq cranked. I played one for many years, and still have a few Marks around. They are similar, but the Triaxis has a certain 'pop' to the strings I miss. It lets some of your clean sound through with...

Song with definitive Tri Axis tone

It's all over Chaos AD and Roots paired with a Strategy 500 power amp, and Andreas is one of the only users I can think of who really capitalized on Lead II Red, which is a pretty unique (and great) sound to the Triaxis. A Mark III or IV are a bit similar, but different. You can pretty much...

Dave Mustaine on everything Gibson. Thoughts?

I recall Marty saying in an interview during their Jackson years that the pinnacle of heavy tone is a Les Paul through a Marshall, which to the best of my knowledge neither of them ever played that combo. Obviously brand endorsements and image were also very important to them. No slight...

    Top 5150 Tones!!

I agree with Carcass Heartwork, and VH Balance. For me those are the pinnacle of tone for both artists. Deep Purple Purpendicular is a great example of a 5150 rock tone.

    Here comes the SLO pedal

I've heard good things in some of the clips, but FWIW haven't really thought of this like a SLO in a box. That whole idea seems a farce for any design. Rather it seems like a much better DS-1, which is a good thing. Looking forward to trying it out with those expectations. Should be great...

Convince me that Jake E. Lee is still a guitar god post Ozzy era

Compared with many solo albums from other guitarists over the past few decades, Jake's really had some nice originality to it:

NAD - Mesa Boogie Mark 2C+ HRX (clips)

Cool, I can't quite make out your settings, is there a particular way you like settings up the EQ? Are you trying to approximate the Mesa 5-band graphic at all, or just adjusting to taste?

Well, Adam Jones still has monster live tone

I wasn't able to catch them in Cleveland this tour, but have seen them several times before. The best show I saw of their's was at Ozzfest at the Akron Rubberbowl (doesn't exist anymore). It 'might' have been the AEnima tour. I recall seeing the Marshall and a Mesa Dual Rec, but not a Diezel...

Mesa Mkll b combo - Loop mod? Or?…

And it appears you have an RP-9 preamp board, maybe an RP-9A if you move the green wires over. 7C power board. I need to pop mine out and check.

Mesa Mkll b combo - Loop mod? Or?…

I own a loop-modded Mark IIB, and do really enjoy the clean tones. Certainly different than fender, and even Mesa Heartbreaker or Mark IV cleans, but very usable at gig volume for a great warm jazz sound. BUT, I treat the IIB like a single channel amp. Run the dials and set up a great clean...

Looking for a furman pq3 or pq4 alternative

Is there a particular way people generally like to set up their Furmans? How many of the bands do you typically use for guitar applications? There are a couple parametric pedals I am interested in trying out someday. Way back TC made two different parametric EQ's, sort of like the big rack...

Looking for a furman pq3 or pq4 alternative

If you want a 1/2 rack unit, the Speck ASC eq's are great. Basically a modern, more quiet and smaller TC 1140. If you are patient they can be found used for $300-400: https://reverb.com/item/49445288-speck-electronics-asc-4-band-equalizer
