I think it is until you really settle on what you like. I still like to experiment, but at this point in my life and playing guitar, I have a good idea of what I want from a humbucker. (Singles are a different story as I don't play them much) If its not there, I move on fairly fast.
I'll reinforce what folks said about learning the pentatonics/modes and how they connect then adding in the diatonic. This worked really well for me. I basically memorized the patterns for Em/Gmaj across the fretboard then learned to insert the diatonic notes. Then for a different key you...
I didn't know this until about 5 or 6 years ago. I grew up with all his yacht rock stuff on the radio in the early 80s. It blew my mind when I found out the guy is a top notch guitar player. And like you guys said, gear head too. He plays Andersons I believe.
I actually like my Maxon OD 808 in front of anything, even my Friedman. I'm trying to remember if I tried an SD-1 with it at one time, I probably did lol.
I really liked the Black Winter. And despite its output, it is actually quite versitile and useable for a variety of styles.
I've often wondered how the Dave Mustaine Thrash Factor compares to the standard JB and if it has tighter, punchier lows for palm mutes.
I used Black Winters for awhile and they are cool pick ups. They seem to have some DNA from the distortion. There was something about the distortion that just seemed too stiff for me (the Mark Morton Dominion from DiMarzio feels the same) that causes me not to like it. And it has this sizzle...
I really like the Custom! I used it for a long time and went back to it a few times. For leads and solos though, I just don't love it. This lead me on a search which ended up at the Afwayu. ?
That's really the issue. You don't get that "punch" from a palm mute either, like you would from a Distortion or a Custom. I love the overall tone, especially for leads, of the JB, but this was always my issue.
I find the Motor City Afwayu still retails that great lead tone but it has the low...
The Aldrich is a great pick up. My issue with it was that it lacked the high end sparkle of the JB, or other pick ups, that I prefer when playing leads and solos. Maybe in some guitars it has that, but not in my PRS CU 24. I prefer the Afwayu from Motor City as a great all around rhythm and...
Yeah the 5150III, especially stealth, has a ton of gain even at low settings. I believe Jens Kruse of Kruse Kontrol does a mod that tames the gain on the red channel a bit. He modded my 5150III 50 watter to stealth specs, fender clean and separate channel 1 and did a great job. I could have...
