I did a little gear shoppin' yesterday and saw a black 5150 III for $1000 and an Egnater Renegade for $650. I'm so overwhelmed with gas that anything reasonably resembling a bargain gets my attention.

I searched around for 5153s and can't find one that cheap. Pull the trigger?

better make sure its not an earlier serial number, could be plagued with switching issues and build defects that were pretty much irradicated in the later models.

the first time i ever played a new 5150 III when they came out it was deffective, the store only had 1 more in a box to replace it at the time.

if its a later serial number i would go for it

That whole "early serial number" thing has never been proven, even on this forum. I believe it is a myth. I have heard just as many people with later numbers have problems as I do early. Later numbers I think would be around the 2000 build number and later. Its hard to define "early" and "late" by number so I define them by what tubes they came with. Early models had a mix of EH and Sovtek tubes while later models had all JJ's, and very recent models had no brand printed on the tubes at all. I have one of the first 500 made (Sovtek and EH tube mix), has been my main amp since 2007, gigged countless times, and have not had any problems with it besides blowing a preamp tube (which I believe was due to a power surge at an outdoor show) and having a bad footswitch cable (which I don't use because I run midi). The cheap cable goes bad quickly and makes the amp do some erradic stuff. Almost every 5150III problem that has been discussed in this forum over the past few years can be boiled down to these 2 problems. I personnally like the "early" models because of the Sovtek/EH tube mix, I believe they sound better. I have also heard that absolutely nothing has changed in the building process/materials since the amp was introduced in the 2007 (besides the tubes of course).

I love my 5150 III, and it's a good deal, so I say go for it.

I had a early serial for a year and never had a problem.
It was a nice amp and sounded great.

Go for it.....Its my main amp now and it is not only a good deal but its one of the best sounding high gainers on the market, Ive tried them all Diezels, Bogners, Soldanos, ENGLs, Vhts etc etc..

Same. Looking forward to when they're released.
