I thought this was pretty interesting...

Roadster, Modern, 50w into a Mesa Widebody 1x12 open back cab with Mesa V30

Roadster, Modern, 100w into Mesa Recto 4x12 with Mesa V30s.

They sound pretty similar, but the 4x12 is a little more bassy, and had a clearer high end.

Are these close miked on one speaker? I'm thinking there would be quite a big difference in the room.

SM57 in close.

If you ignore the obvious difference in SPL.... in the room the open back cab tended to sound a little duller while the Recto cab sounded more interesting (sag?) and had better clarity/presence.

Still... like in the recording they weren't all that far apart. You could easily confuse someone in the next room over.

Not that I'm about to give up my 4x12 for a 1x12....

I have one of the Mesa widebody 3/4 back cabs w/C90 that I use with a widebody DC5 combo, sounds pretty huge.

I still prefer 4x12's though and by my math they are 3x's better than a 1x12 :)

By my math 3 x 1 = 3

If the 1x12 would be closed-back, the difference would be even less. Friend of mine did the same test with his Bogner cabs and recorded the difference was minimal between the 4x12 and 1x12 so now he only records with the 1x12s. I find the 1x12s in general to be easier to mic, I use 2 Bogner 1x12s live (stereo setup) and a simple SM57 sounds great on them and they sound huge thru a PA.

I wouldn't expect much of a difference with a mic'd cab. The difference would be more noticeable in-room. 4x12 simply moves more air.

Although a 1x12 loaded with an EV12L moves a whole lot of air itself.

I used to have one of those thiele cabs with the EV speaker, it waz great! Massive sound, moved a lot of air, and was tight.
