I'm a HUGE Alice In Chains fan! When I heard the Jerry Cantrell was coming to Detroit to support is latest solo record "Brighten", I was stoked!!! The show was originally slated for St Andrews Hall, downtown Detroit. Because of some structural issues the show was mover to The Majestic Theatre in downtown Detroit. I had never been there before and had no idea what to expect.
They told us to be there at 3pm for the soundcheck/meet n greet. I couldn't believe it...this place was small! No balcony, no mezzanine...just floor!! They said their capacity was 1100. A very intimate venue.
There was about 50 of us...we went in and got to see the last 3 or 4 songs of the soundcheck and then Jerry came down to visit with us sign personal items and do pitcures.
After the meet n greet I had some time to kill. There was a bar/bowling alley attached to the theatre, owned by the same people. Had a drink, some pizza...there were concert posters all over the bar area...and i saw one for The Darkness...they were playing at the same place THE NEXT NIGHT. Call a friend who also liked them and he really wanted to go too.
So I got to the Jerry Cantrell show...it was great!! He did a lot of AIC stuff and mixed in a lot of his solo stuff, new and old. Jerry's guitar playing did not disappoint, he had couple sweet custom Gibsons I had never seen before and of course his G&Ls. His band was great!
Drive home, get home at 2 am...get up, go to work and do it all over again the next day.
The Darkness put on a great show as well. Justin Hawkins voice was still as good as it was back in 2003. The band was very tight and sounded great!!
