What say you? bigger sound worth the extra weight?

It's worth it to me. I can't go back to 2x12 after using 4x12's for so long. I actually prefer to use a full stack, so the power is dispersed over 8 speakers. It keeps the tone, huge but tight and defined without any chance of speaker distortion, and I play loud!

Nothing sounds like a 4x12, but I use 2x12's these days. They fit in my car!

2x12's are tighter for downtuned metal IMO. They seem to track and recover much better than 4x12s - especially oversized. If I were in a studio doing recordings with something on a 7, i'd want a 2x12 (non-oversized)

For that matter though, nothing has the low end or fills a room as well as a 4x12. At low volumes you still get excellent low end whereas with a 2x12 the tightness and response effect does not start to happen until some volume is being pushed.

I run 2x 4x12's personally. The bedroom volume tone is massive - there isn't a volume that does not sound great with a 4x12.

I keep a Port City 2x12 around to travel with since it's much easier to move (and sounds a lot closer to a 4x12 than most others I've tried), but that being said 4x12's always sound way better IMO.

Go big or go home.  Nah I've heard some nice 2x12s. But until I start having issues lifting them 4x12s for me.

I've never needed more volume, head room, thickness, or low end than what I get out of my 2x12. I'm using two 150W Eminence speakers, though. It probably depends on the exact speakers and cab, the amp and the rest of your rig, and of course, personal taste, but you can definitely find 2x12's that sound just as huge and most 4x12's.

4x12x sound better but my 40yr old back uses either a lightweight 2x12 that I have or 2 1x12s...besides they mic everything everywhere now anyway so it depends what you need it for...

A single 2x12 doesn't stand up to a 4x12. But use a pair of 2x12's or 1x12's and you may not miss your 4x12. A good combo amp combined with a good 1x12 or 2x12 cab is also a great setup.

A pair of Mesa thiele 1x12's with the EVM speaker have tons of bottom.

I usually rock a 412 but I'm kinda anxious to try out a Fryette FatBottom 212 with the new Fane speakers. The 70 watters should have more than enough power handling but the 90 watt is really fueling my gas.

I have a Bogner 4x12 and 2x12. The 4x12 just has more depth to the tone and pushes more air. Plus, you can mix speakers for more recording options. Volume wise not all that different.

I don't recall ever pushing the master on my VH4 beyond 11 o clock, even on a reasonable stage. Now at home with a 7 month old, I definitely don't get to push anyway near the envelope of my speaker cab. Far from it.

4x12 is certainly the better option sonically for the reasons already mentioned, particularly in the studio where you can let an amp of its reigns, but a 2x12 was more than adequate for every stage I played on, with all the logistical & space saving benefits to boot. I didn't really feel I was compromising my tone by switching to a 2x12. It was a still a world class amp going into a well built cab with V30s.

I never understand when people talk about saving space with a 2x12 vs 4x12. The have the same basic footprint. Unless your talking about in the trunk of a car. But on stage they take up the same space.

I prefer 4x12s. To my ears, they just sound "more righter"...

I liked my 4x12 and I like my 2x12. I mostly stopped gigging and predominantly record at home, so I sold the 4x12 since it took up a lot of space and I couldn't really open her up and threw my 2x12 in a closet with a mic on it. I get sounds I'm happy with out of my setup and wouldn't hesitate to gig with it.

If I did start gigging regularly again, I'd probably grab another 4x12 just for appearances sake. Maybe.

Yep, the Fryette lineup seems to be onto something here. Fryette is totally underrated considering the level of obsessiveness he dictates over his products. Guy's a genius. And his products - incredible.

That said, best sounding 2x12 I've had is the Bogner OS212 closed back. Oddly enough, it's only, what, 6" shorter than a full size standard 412, soooooo.....

Live? 412.
Recording? Hell you can get away with a 1x12 or even a TwoNotes kinda system.
Jammin? A great 212 will be fine.
Bedroom? Axe-FXII :D
