Hello,

since 1994 i´m looking for the real Appetite for destruction amp sound.
After 14 years i got the information from an wikipedia article, that slash used a #39
Tim Caswell mod. marshall 1959 for the AFD.
After that, I found the homepage from Caswell. He still offers the #39 sir mod for 600$.

Before I order this amp, I have some questions:

1. Has this mod really the original sound of AFD?
2. Are there some differences between the mod that slash used in 1986 for AFD and the #39 mod, which is still available from Caswell?
2. Which amp is appropriate to the #39 mod? the marshall 1959 handwired (or normal), 1987 with 50 Watts or the jcm 800 2203?
3. What do you think about this dutch mod (https://youtube.com/watch?v=iLbCX3dU6Z4)?unfortunately it (amp and mod) costs 2300Euro!!!!
4. I am from Germany. So the only way to get a mod is to buy a marshall amp at us-ebay and send it to Caswell.
The shipping costs to germany are about 600$.
Because of the good dollar euro relation, the price is not to high
But ist Tim Caswell a reliable business partner?

jonny toetags has a 2203 with that mod. Perhaps he'll chime in...

Some good questions here. I know nothing about Caswell but hopefully some folks that do will chime. I have to admit, Im very interested in this mod as well. I love AFD.

It should get you pretty close. But even Slash said he tried an amp with the mod and it didn't sound "exactly" like AFD. Not that there was anything wrong with the amp/mod, but more along the lines of there are other factors involved as well.

Have fun with that. The wait time is like 8 months and the amp costs something ridiculous like 7 grand. You could buy 3 modded marshalls for that.

I had Caswell do his work this past summer on my 2203.

1- It's 99.9% there. It's the closest i've ever got (including a Jubilee/Slash sig). But speakers, tubes, guitar (etc) will affect the outcome. I shipped my 2203 to Tim with no tubes and asked to put the closest ones to what the original had to get the AFD tone.
2-His mod contains more stuff than the original mod back in the day. It is 3 mods in one (AFD mod, Lynch mod, clean channel mod)
3- no idea
4-Tim is GREAT. He responds to emails fast and has great customer service.

I did a review here a while back.

My buddy is getting his Plexi modded by Tim. I am curious to see if the tones change depending on the amp model.

Not if he lives in Germany and will be paying in EURO's, it's priced like a Diesel VH4 or Wizard, last amp you will ever have to buy......8 month wait yea but it's worth every second.

Larry is GREAT to deal with, and has helped me alot in the past. Call or email him and let him know what you are looking for tone-wise. Even if his current offerings do not fit the bill, I bet he would still try to help you out.

Here is his email address: larryamps@gmx.com

Larry is cool and knows his stuff, esp. Marshalls.

I can offer you a 100s Marshall with - lets call it custom transformers, already modded for an additional clean channel but still originally looking and we could tweak the circuitry together until you like what you hear, you just need to take the car and drive a bit south-east.

It looks like this:

Of course you can have a headshell in a different color and - if you can't resist - a Marshall logo.

AFD was a truly great album, one of the best of the 80's, but I never loved Slash's tone. A little too saturated and fizzy for me.

If tone is in the hands, to truly get Slash's sound from AFD do you have to hire Tim Pierce to play your solos? ;)
