Just got a mini rectifier. Found a great deal on a 4x10 cabinet and said...you know what...I will give it a shot.

It is currently being shipped...but having doubts now. Will this combo work out? Any tried a smaller hi gain head with el84s paired with a 4x10 cabinet?

Thanks.

I've used bigger amps with a 4x10 and liked it a lot. SLO and even a Triple Rec sounded cool with little Marshall 1965 cabs. Warmer than comparable 2x12 cabs, IMHO. Not as much high and low extension as the 12s, but that's often not really needed. I still prefer 4x12 of course.

Is it (the 4x10) a Marshall 1965B or A cab?

I had both and especially the B (straight) cab rocked with my EVH 5150III 50, which I noticed you also have. It will take off some of the strident highs, allowing you to run the presence higher. Also punchy and warm.
I eventually sold them, as the 1966 cabs give me a bit more lows.

+1 on the 65 cab's, the 35's rock, not sure if its the right speaker for a RECK thou, they're a greenback voiced speaker,

I picked up an Avatar "Vintage" 2x12 w/G12M's that actually sounds bigger than (now traded) Marshall 425a 4x12 w/G12C's.

Just got it. Firing it up soon. Will report back.

so the 4x10 actually sounds pretty good. i can tell it is a bit loose on the low end to handle the mesa. a boost might help it tighten up. however i am happy with it for home use and jamming with friends. the amp is VERY loud and definitely does the big brother rectifier sound well. i am happy with it. it reminds me of my old 2 channel triple i had.

-I'd keep an eye out for another Marshall 65-B cab, remove/replace the baffle & put a 15" FULLBACK in that bitch and try to wipe that shit eating grin off your face...

I didn't replace the baffle on mine, but I *did* put in a center brace (solid wood), screwed to the backpanel too, as well as some dampening materials inside.
It cleaned up the sound a bit, as well making the low-end tighter.
But in the end, I still felt that the 1966 cabs brough a bit more to the table; especially once I replaced one T75 with a V30 from my Mesa 2x12 vertical.
I put in a G12-65 in that Mesa cab, which now makes it my best sounding 2x12 by far and is what I use for 90% of my gigs (when I'm not bringing the 4x12 Engl).

I do not like 10's for guitar at all. :aww:

Had a Bassman and Vibrolux and couldn't get rid of them fast enough.

I've done the same with mine. A little damping inside the 1965 cab was nice. I also have the T75/V30 combo in my 1966, and it sounds very nice. Don't use either cab now (just my 1960a these days), but the 1965 and 1966 cabs really are great.

As long as it's not a 4x10 bass cab...they can sound dull and hollow. They are also often 4ohms and the speakers aren't tuned for the freq spectrum guitar dominates.
