I had decided to sell my Mojave 4x12 since it wasn't sounding quite right. Derek St. Holmes once told me to fiberglass the inside of my 4x12 cabinet to help get rid of standing waves, and balance the resonate tone of the cabinet. I didn't have any fiberglass, so I cut open a new pillow that I picked up at Dillard's last week... (need 'screaming wife' emoticon) I was going to staple the padding in, but instead decided to use some Scotch spray glue. Not only does it look cool - the cabinet now sounds incredible! If anyone else has done this, please tell me if you've experienced the same results.

I do that to most cabs, and basically the same stuff. I use stuffing for the inside of quilts.

Bogners that just have it on the back, i left that way.

So, yea i like it better that way.

You have snow in your cab   but seriously it made that big of a difference for you, very cool

I just did the opposite with my Bogner 4x12. Pulled all the batting out to give it a little more life. But after I sealed it back up, it was too boomy so I compromised with a little Brazilian strip down the back panel right behind the magnets. Now it sounds great! I'm certainly no acoustics engineer so there was a little trial and error involved in that one.

Agreed. I was going to just do the back panel, but I had extra padding... I just couldn't resist temptation. :D

I've been thinking about this for a while now. What's the biggest improvement over all in your opinion?

Cab looks pretty damn cool.

The result is a tighter bottom-end, defined mids, and smoother highs. I don't think I would do it with a pine cabinet, but this is IMO the way to go with birch.

I may have to do this to my Marshall cab.

Off hand, does anybody know if Marshall made the AX cab (mine was made in 96') in birch or pine? Not trying to create a new version of Poly vs. Nitro but I'm curious.

Thanks for the heads up man!

I think they are birch, but dont quote me on that.

I tried this in one of my Marshall cabs once. I felt it made it lifeless and odd sounding. I only did the back panel though

Thanks!

I just refinished it a couple months ago.

Hate it though (I get obsessive over my work). When my girlfriend and I move to FL next summer, I'm sending it to Historic Makeovers for their Standard package.

Yep on all my closed cabs I've had. 3 sides, light on the back panel. My 2-12 V30's cab is tight as hell.

Interesting. I should do this on my Peavey cab. It sounds ok but not amazing. the only thing is it is front loaded and a bitch to work on.

are you keeping the cab now, and do you run any mojave amps currently?

I believe it's birch...it's definitely not pine. Pine was typically used for vintage Fender cabs...I'm not aware of any popular 4x12 cabs that used it.

I'm planning on keeping the cabinet, unless I get a new head with a matching cabinet. I've been playing a Mojave/Alex Saraceno Dirty Boy, but sold it to a Rig-Talk member last Friday. He's sending the payment actually... I've thought about getting a Scorpion head, or possibly a Suhr '68 100 watt head. I can always just place an alternate logo on the cab if need be.

It makes sense to do that. They use it on studio monitors or stereo speakers, so why not on a 4 x 12 cabinet? Sounds like a good idea.

I read a book on subwoofer design awhile back, they used stuff like this to increase the apparent dimensions of the box. It could add approximately 20% to the volume. They use it to minimize size in subwoofer encloosures, especially automotive applications where size is an issue. 20% is quite a bit.
