There is really no need to buy a 3k amp to play this type of metal when this sounds better right out of the box and no boosting...

Stephen Platt from Collibus makes some awesome Laney vids as well.

any Laney Gh100L owners here?

Is that what model is in the YouTube vid?

Sounds good, I'd like to hear more.

I wouldn't go as far as saying this thing could compete or sound better than a $3k amp but better is subjective of course.

Sounds great alone, I actually think it could sound really good boosted (imo) as well. :)

and it probably would!

I'm thinking about getting one just to have around for something different.... the model in the video is the GH100L
It has that round toroidal? power transformer. But the build quality on these is top notch... both the pre and power amp tubes are mounted to the chassis and I saw good quality wima caps etc used...same stuff bogner uses. Other than that weird choice of a power transformer the build quality certainly compares to the pcb stuff Ive seen around at 3 x the price.

I found this demo showing the clean to overdrive flexibility... not bad

Love mine although it's pretty beat up tolex wise. Great amps but I don't think you will find one new for $500. They have a bias selector on the back for EL34 or 6L6 I believe. I love the EL34's in mine. These things are really solid amps and I am pretty sure Paul Gilbert used them for a bit. They weigh a ton and sound really heavy too....

How do you like this amp compared to your 5150?

and yeah, 500 bucks for a used one on craigslist her locally... thinking about it

I would say they do similar things but the 5150 might be grittier. If that makes sense. The Laney has tons of gain on tap but I have never really used the clean which I very much love on the 5150 with a Tele playing through it. I know most people wouldn't use it that way but hey I love it. $500 for a clean one is pretty good. They really are awesome amps. I have owned 2 of the 100's and always wanted a 50. Even the first one I bought like 15 years ago was ordered as a 50 and came in as a 100. Guy gave it to me for the same price so I took it. If you dig these look for the old Ampeg VL502 they are serious awesome amps for the $$$$...

I bought my VH100R for $400 AUD. Score and a half, it roars like a monster.

Not a GH 100L but i recently got a beat up VH 100R in a trade, supposedly to be sort of the same but with two channels. I was gonna fix it up and sell it but after new tubes and a biasadjustment, i tried it in My EVH cab and it sounded really good! I prefer to back down the gain and boost it with a tubescreamer, sounds really "Marshall-y" if that makes any sense and it just feels right, the leadsound is awesome! Still prefer My 5150 for all out chug but for leads and more hardrock-oriented sounds, this is a really good amp! And o,it sounded pretty good in a Rectifier cab aswell.
This was a really good deal as Laneys are not to popular Here in Sweden. Too bad really as they go really cheap on the used market.

Swemike, I think the VH/GH series is basically an 800 circuit with a value changes and another gain stage, which is why it has that definite British sound. And yes, it sounds best with the gain and drive knobs backed down just a little, with a boost to push it over the top. I don't like the resonance switch though, makes it sound too 'distant' if that makes sense.

You guys make me want to try one.

I'd get that if I had the extra $$$. Offer him $400 and see what he says.

Gain is in the fingers.

I mean tone. Yeah tone is in the fingers.
