and what about 1 mega ohm? Stew Mac doesn't seem to have long shaft mega ohm... where else?

My les paul studio came stock with 500K pots sounds great with my BKP Cold Sweat set! Ceramic love!

I don't think anything less than 500K in a LP is any good. I use 500K & they sound right IMO.

My understanding is the higher ohm caps you install, the brighter they sound.

I went with 500k pots all around for my Les Pauls. With my Les Paul custom it was like taking a blanket off the guitar, stock it had 300k.

You should bet able to get the long shaft pots from Luxxtone or guitar parts resource. CTS are pretty good, but their tolerance is not very tight....

I got the CTS pots here, but the CGE's are fine. http://www.luxxtone.com/product.php?pro ... =19&page=1
Either will work....

How do you check what the resistance is of the installed pot? I don't think mine are stamped?

Where the heck do you get 550k pots?

You make them.

Use a DMM.

I have a meter - can you do it with the pot installed and wires connected? If so how do you measure it?

Going from 250-300 to 500 can really be the trick, depending on the guitar/pickups, in my experience. But I can't remember ever trying a guitar I liked with 1meg pots.

Dave,

What's your trick for making the 550k pots, if you don't mind sharing.

Go to http://www.rsguitarworks.net and order their super pots for the volumes and cts pots for the tone. You can get them in long or short shaft. These will definitely do the trick! The superpots measure at least 500k and the cts that they have are within very tight tolerances. While your at it pick up some good caps. They sell complete upgrade kits as well and they work great!

I have rs superpots in my R8 and some going in my traditional this week. I measured the superpots and one was at 569 and the other just over 570. The cts pots I got from rs for the tones are at 490 and 495
