hi guys,

thought i would start here on RT for any advice.

i need to get a new Power Transformer for my 5150 mk1 block letter.

will use this as a opportunity to hopefully "upgrade" to a better one (?)

i remember back in the day Mercury making good ones ?

Any one had any experience with a replacement power transformer and best ones to try and source?

Thanks

I'm not sure if it's worth "upgrading" the power transformer since the tonal difference might be minimal compared to upgrading the output transformer. A Mercury one would cost about half the amp when you land that in NZ. Maybe talk to the Kosmic Sound guys and see if they can get you a factory replacement? A 6505 one should be compatible.

thanks man.

is the output transformer the ones people get for a upgrade?

whats the difference between a Power Transformer and a Output Transformer ??

i will look into sourcing one from the factory, this was the other option :)

is this what i would be needing?

thanks for the info

Power transformer isn't in the signal path, the output transformer is. Of course you'd still want decent ones but not a whole lot of point dropping US$300 on one, especially for a US$450 amp.

Yes that TAD one will work. Another option is to see if you can get someone local to rewind your current one. Is your one blown or are you just wanting to converting a 110V one to 230V?

cheers man, cost of a new one 2nd hand one in NZ is 2 times as much as the tranny. and i like the one i got so will get it fixed. A friend was borrowing it and it broke on him so we gona go halfs :)

contact the people at heyboer, will be as good as mercury and cheaper

ok, so, my tech just messaged me "The transformer is ok. Was manifesting all the signs of shorted turns internally - but was not!" looks like might be something with the phase inverter. crisis maybe averted thanks for everyones messages been nice to learn about amps again
