5150 seems to have lost volume, but sounds normal, WTF?

I got this amp on ebay a few weeks ago. Long story short, seller packed it like shit, top vent broken, but the amp sounds fine.

I recently got a Mesa oversized 4x12 (8 ohms), and the Peavey just does NOT sound as loud as it should through the amp. I'm gonna bring it to my tech, buttttt

Is it possible for an amp to lose volume because of tubes or whatnot, but still sound the same??

I had a 50W marshall with a tube blown and one working. It sounded fairly close to normal just a little nastier and quieter. I had an ampeg vl502 that sounded the same as normal just lost volume that was due to some shitty connector. I had a 2205 that would lose volume and sound the same and it was due to bad jacks in the effects loop.

So anyways, yeah it is possible.

Thanks for the reply man. When you had the issue with the effects loop, did the amp cut out every now and then, or just sounded quieter? I've had similar issues.

I mean, the amps looked like shit when I got it, so who knows. I'm gonna retube and do the bias mod anyway.

Did you swap out all your tubes with a known good pre amp and power amp tube? Most tube amp problems have to do with the tubes themselves.

I'm not sure if this is the case for this particular issue, but did you try spraying some contact cleaner in the effect loop jacks and then plugging a cord in and out a few times?

I think it went back and forth between full volume and quieter.

FWIW Tubes can get messed up in shipping without being "broken".

+1 Do this

if your changing power tubes I recomend trying T.A.D.'s in the power section and a mullard in V1. if you've never tried that combo before

Thanks for the replies fellas.

No, it's not intermittently cutting in and out, it just seems quieter than other 5150s I've had. Hell, on top of this cab it should sound fucking deafening. I've had the cut out problem with my Ampeg VH-140C, but this is a different issue.

No, I haven't tried swapping tubes. I'm most likely going to just take it to the shop for a checkup, bias mod, and tubes. Get it all done in one shot, ya know?

thanks dudes

try putting a jumper cord in the fx loop send and return.

How are you plugging in the 8 ohm cab? If you're just plugging it in the ext jack and running with the stock speakers you have an impedance mismatch.

I plug into the 8 ohm input and have the amp set to 8 ohms.

My bad, I thought I read this was a 5150 combo.

So that's correct, connection wise right?

Hmmm
