If you loved the 5150 series and want to move up, which would you prefer, the 5153 or Archon combo?

Man the Peavey is a classic. It's guaranteed to sound good.

He's asking about the EVH or PRS. I'd go EVH, my experience with the Archon combo wasn't very good. Not very gainy, needed a boost to get anywhere near EVH blue channel gain let alone red. I'm sure the 100w head is cool though.

Tones are way different...Archon is a bit more distant and modern....EVH combos are a cool too though.

I had a 5153 for a few years, and recently sold it, and ended up with an Archon 25 combo. I swapped the G12t75 for an EVH greenback, and that made the amp a million times better. The Archon is very different from the 5153. There is zero buzz, it is a darker, and fatter amp in general, but somehow at the same time it has way more note definition. With the Archon I find I have to run the gain high to get the sound I want, and work the volume control if I want less gain. Also the Archon clean is one of the best I have ever played.

This is my experience as well. Very different amps, but both very good at what they do and how they do it.

Never played the Archon but my 5153 50 watt is a great amp. The blue channel is just...perfect. Green and red are great too. I have the 1X12 combo version.

I guess it depends on what type of sound you are going for. The Archon does have nice cleans but I felt the gain channel was lacking especially if you were going to compare to a 5153... but if cleans is your thing you could say the 5153 is lacking ;) Good luck!
