Which is best for HBE/BE 6550's or EL-34's? And are they interchangable once the mods are done? I'm guessing yes.

I preferred mine with the 6550's. I can say I only piggybacked the one resistor in the bias circuit to try the 34's. I did not change the other three resistors which are not needed to bias up 34's but could possibly affect the tone of them. I am not sure. There are four resistor changes made by Marshall between the 34's and 6550's.

Both are good and interchangeable, just different.

We went back and forth on a couple of our vintage Marshalls with the KS. For me EL34s are THE sound. They saturate and are voiced like what my vision of a great Marshall is. I think the 6550s are more raw and raunchy. The difference was in my amps the 6550 reminded me of The Who, JET ect.. and the EL34s reminded me of Eddie, AIC, Hetfield, Yngwie. YMMV
