In general terms. I go back & forth but give the edge to 6L6's.

I like both but generally go back to 6L6s. More of the Recto ‘wall of sound’ thing that defined them is a little more present with 6L6s. But 34s sound killer too.

I can get a whole lotta midrange from 6L6's.
Not just an EL-34 thing.
34's on the red channel basically a set & forget thing but not much else but it does that one thing really well.
I seem to get more sonic options from 6L6's.

I really liked Ruby EL34BSTRs in the 94 Dual Rec I had many moons ago. That amp was killer. Had been modded for an adjustable bias. I miss that amp.

Last time I swapped, I remember being surprised that I didn't like the EL34 as much as the 6L6 in the amp. It seemed to accentuate some mid frequencies that weren't pleasant, but this was a while ago. Even then, the difference was fairly small.

EL34's for me.

Had them in my old Trem-O-Verb. It was tight yet chewy. Instant Superunknown.

Never liked what I’ve heard of rectos with el34’s, takes away the “rectoness”

Have you tried Orange cloned to Modern? I’m more recently into Rectos; tried them like 15 yrs ago but hated them since I didn’t own a boost pedal at the time. But I greatly prefer Orange to modern; almost makes the red sound ‘sterile’ by comparison

I prefer EL34’s in both my Rev F/C Triple and Badlander. More growl, aggression, cut, not as loose. 6L6’s were smoother, less mids, but deeper sounding. Both sound good

This is the only way I run my rectifier. Orange Modern is so much thicker than the red channel. I personally only run Mesa 425 STRs, green label. Steve K turned me on to them many moons ago and I haven't looked back
Ahh the Sovtek wafers ....I’ll have to try them. I’ve found the Rectos didn’t sway much with power tube swaps-like Mesa 415s, 440, Winged C etc as much as my C+ did. Pre tubes do make some differences. But I’ll have to try the Wafers. My SLOs loved them.

Pretty even split so far. I am surprised. I would have thought 6L6 would have won easily.

I’m live on Orange/Modern. It’s way more raw, full and aggressive.
