I was under the impression that you either had the B (EL34) or the A (6L6) power sections for the XTC. After seeing the new Wizard MC 25 and knowing the sound of the MC50 it got me to thinking "I wonder if an XTC could handle 6V6's and what would it sound like?" Lo and behold on the Bogner website, it says that you can get a 45 watt XTC loaded with 6V6's. I can only imagine the cleans, the Plexi Mode and lead stuff would sound great.

So, has anyone ever heard one? What would it take to transform a 101B to a 6V6 powered XTC other than the tube swap and a rebias? I have a 101B and was thinking of giving it a shot.

I don't think there are many guys on this particular forum that would opt for the 45 watt 6V6 Ecstasy over the 100/120 watt 6L6/EL34 models.....

You are probably right. But with as many guys that buy, sell, modify and accumalate amps I thought maybe someone would gave it a shot. Just curious.

I think the other thing is why mess with perfection?

Honestly, I can't imagine "modding" my 20thA XTC. Nor would I consider screwing with it in the least - other than different powertubes - to achieve a different tone.

Thing is godlike outta the box.

Actually, I think a 6V6 Ecstasy would be incredible. I absolutely love the Duende and Goldfinger 45. In fact, I would have liked to get a 6V6 XTC 20th than the 6L6 version simply because you have to get quite loud to get the 6L6's cooking. I think the 20th XTC would be a better candidate for 6V6's than the 101B since it's more open and uncompressed and would compensate for the small bottle tubes.

So did you do it? I emailed bogner amps about trying to use 6L6's in my XTC and they said I shouldnt because the transformer isnt setup to use 6L6's. They said the impedence is different between EL34's & 6L6's so I dont know if 6V6's arent.

I did not do anything as of yet. Jorg at Bogner told me they have a prototype XTC with 6V6's and he said he prefered it, but no one had ordered one. That was about a week or two ago. Not sure I wanna use my 101B as a guinea pig as they have to swap the transformer and I'd have to ship it out there as well. Might be a costly experiment, but then again it might be totally worth it. I asked if they would upgrade any of the caps or other components to get the clean channel closer to the 20th or what it would cost. I didn't get a response as of yet.

I'm with you on the lower wattage. I'm pretty much done with 100 watters. Can't tell you the last time I ran my XTC on full power. I don't know one venue in this city where they make any sense unless it's a big theater gig. Even then your probably getting a monitor mix. 50 watts cranked isnt exactly quiet.
