I am thinking of grabbing a baritone scale 7 string sometime this year so that I can play Nevermore and early-ish Meshuggah stuff (the stuff that was played with a 7). Should I get passives or actives? If I get actives I want a 707, and if I get passives I want a Duncan Custom 7.

Both of my 7's have passives. One has a SD Distortion 7 and the other has a BKP warpig 7 set. I love them both. I am not a fan of actives in general. I think it a lot of guys think that active pickups sound tighter on 7 strings than passive pickups. I don't find that to be true at all. My low B is super tight with either guitar.

Just did alot of searching and went with a custom 7 in the bridge and a jazz in the neck.
Didn't want the emg's since you can't use a 5 way with 2 humbuckers, or split them the same way as passives.
Plus I hate the sterile EMG sound.

Yeah i don't like the EMG in my B-7  But you might, all about the ears and amp you're using.

I have a Duncan Invader 7 in my 7 string, and it's killer.

I love the EMG 707, and it IS the Nevermore sound, so ....

Exactly

Except the Meshuggah sound is passives :aww:

I love the 707 as well, but I'd feel locked into a pickup or brand, whereas if I went the passive route, there are quite a bit more pickups to play with if I want to experiment with different sounds. Why do they have to route EMG's so WIDE! Makes every tone chaser's life difficult!

meshuggah sound = Lundgren M7

Yeah, that's an option as well. I love the Duncan Custom that I have in my 6 string guitar. To me it would be an awesome sound if my guitar had an extra low string. Great mid definition, remains tight in the low end and not too bright. If the Custom 7 is very close to this then I would love to try it out.

The custom 7 is nothing like the M7 at all, nowhere near as grindy, focused, aggressive and tight.
The custom is one of my favorite pickups but there are much more aggressive ones out there, have you considered any bareknuckles?

Neat, thanks for the comparison. I just meant if the Custom 7 sounds very close to the standard Custom 6 string model then I would like it. I've considered BKP's, but I'm not so sure that they're for me. I'm using Duncans in all of my 6 string guitars and I am very happy with my sound, but I've been curious about EMG's as well, so I'm keeping them open as an option.

Don't count out a SD Distortion, man. Super tight and agressive. Love that pickup.

Hell yeah

Got a Duncan Distortion in my Jackson and I love it for that sludgy, heavy, larger than an elephants fuzzy nuts metal tone! The tone I get from my Custom loaded guitar is a little 'cleaner' I'd say, maybe more balanced. More of what I'd want with a 7 I think. But since I do love the Distortion very much as well, I could keep that open as an option as well

I have a Distortion. I would like to hear the Custom and Invader.

Cant stand the JB :D

I would say if you're going passive, get a Lundgren M7 for the bridge and a Dimarzio Liquifire for the neck. The LF is for sure the smoothest, warmest and most beautiful neck pickup I've ever used. If you're going active, go with Blackouts. I've used EMGs and Blackouts both extensively, and I definitely prefer the BOs. I am by no means an EMG hater, but they're a one trick pony. Granted, that trick is a very good one, but BOs are more open, natural and organic. Just as ballsy, but they clean up nicer than EMGs do. The decision is ultimately up to you, but those would be my choices for that sound.

The dimarzio liquifire/crunchlab set can be had for roughly half the cost of a single Lundren and is a fantastic pair of pickups. Wire them on a three-way Petrucci style and you can get some awesome tones :)
