I currently have a JB and I'm looking for something in the same vain but with a MUCH tighter bass response. I love the pronounced mid voicing it has so I would like to retain that characteristic as much as possible. Its strange because I have 2 6 stringers with a JB in the bridge and they are both have tight bass but for whatever reason I find the 7 string version to be very loose in comparison. All recommendations welcome ?

I liked the Duncan Custom and Distortion a lot in various 7-string. But I don't think I found the JB 7 to have a loose low end, so I might not be much help.

I like the fishman modern, emg 81-7, 56-7, nazgul, blackouts and 707, they’re all a bit different but all pretty damn good. I did not like the invader or the d-activator and the crunch lab was “meh”

Oh yeah the custom and distortion were both pretty nice too, actually I think maybe mine was a custom custom or alnico I can’t remember ?

The Fishman Moderns are my fav 8-string pickup. I suspect they would work really well for 7-strings too. Both the Alnico and Ceramic sound awesome in the bridge position.

I tried the 8-string EMG 56 and whatever the other is, and didn't like them (muddy?). The EMG 60-7 is a pretty cool bridge pickup IMHO.

I thought the D-Activator was legitimately bad and also give a big meh to the Crunch Lab.

Always wanted to try the Nazgul.

Depends on the guitar, but huge fan of Lundgren’s pickups. Very tight, clear, articulate.

I had a JB-7 in my Mayones Setius 7, I didn’t like it much, not tight or clear enough. I swapped the magnet for a thick ceramic magnet and that cleared it right up. Tighter and more aggressive, a bit more output too. Same general vibe, just more ‘metal’. I believe the distortion is a JB with a thick ceramic magnet (or at least very similar).

i also have the Duncan designed 7 string bridge pickup out of an old schecter (I had compared back-to-back in the same guitar with the JB-7 before I did any magnet swaps and it was almost exactly the same sounding). I put an alnico 8 magnet (same thickness) in that one, much more subtle change but it did tighten it up a bit, shifted the mids and generally made it much more pleasant sounding to me.

again depends on the guitar/woods etc. but I've had great luck with the BK Holydiver in a few 7's. kind of like a tighter smoother JB
I have BK True Grits in my Rg752AHM and those are pretty tight, more mid focused like a JB than the Holy diver.
