76 50watt Marshall JMP advice

Unmolested it is a pretty good price. A tad bit more desireable if it is the old style tolex and small Marshall logo as late in 76 I believe they switched to large logo style headshell. Original trannies and mustard caps and no holes drilled is a plus. See if it is el34 or 6550, stock for USA was 6550 tubes. I had two different 76 jmp's over the yrs and both were pretty crunchy.

gut shots help, but not easy to do if youre buying it from someone i guess. i bought one earlier this year and had to pay someone to revert it back to stock. not bad as i have about a grand in it, and its been retubed with kt88's, and new caps etc....

I believe 76 even though it had the master volume the preamp circuit was a little different. They made the a change in 77 to the what we know as the current 2203/2204 preamp circuit. I think it was the V1 v2 gain stage.

Is it a master volume amp? Not all were back then. I had 2 76's, neither had masters. They sounded great on 10   :)

If it is a master volume model then yes the preamp was a little different spec the first yr only. Pretty rare though.

As mentioned, if it a master volume model it has probably a slightly different preamp section (non-cascaded). 1976 seems to be transition year. I.e. it has much less gain and be easily converted to the later ones.

I have this model, I like it a lot lot bought it used from a French guy, who said it sounded special and he liked it best.

I try to find a gut shot which I made, my model seems to be almost stock.

As you can see, I tried a lot of pedals in front of it, preferred very much the rodenberg 728NG (less nasal and kind of class a sounding TS and boost), but without mod, even the rodenberg gets it only to early 80ties hard rock, no high gain.

I compared it with a later 800 jcm, prefer the 76 by a lot, much more plexi vibe, deeper, nastier.

I reacts quite sensitive to preamp tube change (more than later models), I prefer white badge mullard from blackburn plant in the first slot.

I paid around 850 Euro, which is nothing for it, kills for classic/hard rock all new amps.....bogner goldfinger (which is quite cool) sounds flat compared, without mojo.

The other very cool pedal in front of it (hendrix, garage rock, noise rock) is a dirt cheap HBE Germania (tried the pink one).

I hve a feeling that those transitional years with the paralel gain stages NOT cascade might become collectable. either way id buy it. if it were a 100 watter the average is like 1500 so sounds about right.

it sounds like mine . If it is the model with the parrallel gain stage its not going to be crunchy at all .As mentioned above its easy to convert it to a cascading gain stage . I got mine for $600 but it had a blown pwr trans . I modded the crap out of it and it ROCKS. So for $900 I would say go for it

I have two in the year (range) gotta double check exact years but they are both awesome 50 watters and I have had them since the late 80's. One is a Non-MV 4 holer and one a MV 2 holer. I modded the 4 holer with a PPIMV and it just kills. I did the mod so it could be removed with very little trace. Used the second speaker out for the pot. Great amp's this things and just something about them that no other amp does. IMHO. They both take pedals really well. The 4 holer also has the jumper option for even more sounds. The 2 holer has a bit more gain.
