when i say metal, i mean older metal

i know it can be boosted to get to metal, what boost though? regular old tubescreamer style, or does it require more extra gain?

Boss Metalzone.

Just kidding. That should never be the answer to anything.

A good lod TS9 will get you into 80s metal heaven with the Classic without a problem. Enjoy the amp!

TS9, OCD or BB Preamp all sound great with my old Classic 50-212.
KILLER drive channel on those suckas!!

Depends a bit on the guitar, but even boosted with that open back combo my buddy's Classic 30 just doesn't quite get there. Now if you can add a closed back cab, you can do it much more convincingly. My buddy likes to boost his with a Maxon OD-9. He has a Celestion G12H30 in the combo and a Warehouse Veteran 30 in the closed back 112.

also, is there a difference between the new tweed models and the old black ones

All I know is my Classic 50 has 4 el84's and just about every boost I've put in front of it has sounded good. I've settled on a Micro Amp as my main boost, but I use a modded SD-1 when I want more mids and/or gain.

and why are there 4 power tubes if its the classic 30 is only 30 watts

Because they use EL84s, so it takes four of them to get 30 watts.

I'll +1 this.

Every amp I've ever heard with EL84's is crap for metal or super high gan stuff. They get too loose and muddy when you drive them hard.

C50s have dramatically more headroom and damping than any other EL84 IO have ever used.
It's NOT going to give you Metallica, but definitely some old Priest.

I'd agree with this. I like the Peavey Classics, but not for metal. Maybe it's just me, but even with a boost to get the desired gain level, it's just not voiced right. The EL84's just don't have enough oomph to them. It would probably sound fine for leads though.
