I just registered on here to specifically ask this question because it's something I've been pondering for a while now, and can't find any info on my own. I'm completely new to forums so bear with me please.

Is it possible to run my guitar into an ABY switcher to split my signal to two pedalboard/amp setups? I've only ever seen ABY pedals used at the end of pedalboards to send the signal to two amps, not in front of two separate chains of pedals and amps.

I've been dreaming of a rig that involves getting either an Orange Amp Detonator or Fulltone True-Path ABY, running my guitar signal straight into the ABY, then out to two separate pedalboards, into two separate amps, each with their own speaker cab. For what it's worth the two amps are a 1970's solid-state Peavey Standard 260 and a solid-state Hilbish Design PB-10 rack preamp and tube power amp. Both amps set cleanish. Getting all distortion/fuzz tones from pedals.

My tastes are of the doom/stoner/psych variety and what I'm really trying to achieve is running one guitar signal into two different gain devices into two different amps for a layered wall of sound effect, almost like two guitarists. I know that the basis of how "good" this will sound is completely subjective to the particular amps and pedals in use (and where you personally draw the line between music and noise). What I'm trying to figure out before shelling out the money for an ABY, is whether or not this should in theory work.

Sorry for writing a book, but I thought it'd be helpful to give as much info as possible. Please know what you guys think! Thanks!

Had a buddy that did similar for awhile back in the late 90s. His guitar went into a stereo delay then each out went to a dual rectifier 1/2 stack with a 20 or 30 millisecond delay difference between the two amps to thicken it up. You might want to check out a pedal from TC electronic called the Mimiq doubler, might achieve a similar effect. Good luck!
