Decided to get the ole Bogner modded JCM800 Acme Tone Sucker out today. Tried the Tung Sols...nope. Installed some SED's....nope. Went back with the EH 6CA7's that was in the amp when I got it....nope. Back to SED's and pulled all the 12AX7WA Sovktek tubes. Went back with an NOS Mullard in V1, a couple of Penta C8's in gain and CF. Better, but the SED's are severe crap in a Plexi circuit with a master volume. Still eke out the tiniest bit of sustain and half as tube distortion in the crunch channel. Had the brand new Gold Lion KT77's sitting there and decided to give them a go. Holy shit Batman. Instant fullness, way more cranked Plexi distortion on the crunch channel. Had to actually clean up all the slop, man up and platy properly. Going to set up the Y-Not and see how this blends with the new Golub modded JMP I just got back. It should be some good crack.

Gonna try the tubes in something else a little heavier with a master volume and see how it goes. I may have to grab a few sets. Hell, they aren't much more than an SED anymore.

Fuck an A brother. The Gold Lions are probably my favorite tube right now. In the right amp they do wonders.....magical mojo. :D They kick ass in my Peters and Engl. I still prefer =C= SED EL34 in the Herbie though.

All in all, worth every penny to me. Glad they are workin for you.

And yes..................I said Fuck an "A"

This is a stupid question, but are KT77s direct replacements for EL34s? Can I just drop a set of these KT77s in my Marshall 2204 and go?

Yes sir they are, after proper biasing.

[Drop in replacement]
Yes, with some biasing changes of course... They're the same kinda tube, but different.

Yo Stevie!! Have you tried the GLKT77's in the 20thA-X yet??

Peace,
Mo

The 77's are drop in replacements. I did find that they pull about 4-5 more volts than EL34's, so you will have a little rebiasing to do, depending on the tube rating. As an example, the Bogshall with SED's was showing 405PV and had had bias set at 36mA and the tube rating was 34. The GLKT's had a rating of 24 and when I dropped them in, PV was measured at 410V and the bias settled around 32.

mids are good, but not as good as SED's. the Gold Lions mid focus is higher up than the SEDs.

however the Gold Lions aren't ice pick high like, some or atleast one of the New Sensor 34s.

the Gold Lion 77's are nice tubes, and a nice tool for the tool box. IMHO in most amps, SED's will beat them, but when the Lions fit, they fit well.

i feel the Gold Lions are good for juicing up low gain amps, and then there's no rhyme or reason for what high gainers they'll work in, other than they can liven up an amp short on top end.

Steve is just setting you all up for the next ACME sale. OH it`s the greatest of the greatest.

Hell, I tried to give it away. Funny, when I bought it, everyone was tripping over their nut sacks to get it and spewing about how great it was and got in line with their "dibs". Not one of those fuckers to be found with me taking a 40% hit. The previous set up of this amp was lame as shit and I just brought it to life. I have a closet full of old Marshall's and this one may just earn a spot to hang around. I don't know what your experience with good gear is, but this one is getting there. The classified for this amp is now pulled.

That's kind of the way my thinking is. I haven't found much of any amp that SED's won't at least improve on opening the amp up. But, I found one and the GLKT77's vastly improved the response on the Acme!

Dude if I had the cash Id buy it.

I have been trying to do some forensics on it. But, it is a little hard for me to follow. I am going to hang onto it. It A/B's really well with a high gainer (Aldrich Mod/Cali, etc).

Mojo, My main shit stain if you never wipe yo ass. The KT77's work very well in the 20X. So do the Winged C EL34. The 77's are better for the clean channel and the blue channel with the Plexi mode on. The 77's work very well with a plexi type tone. They also make the red channel more modern sounding, if that is a flavor you care to taste here and there. They are not for every amp but they are great tubes. You shoould definitely add some to your tool box. A different but really good flavor to have. Not that my opinion means shit :D Feel free to obsesss for awhile longer over the 77's and the Shiva. After all, if you are like me, what would you do without these obsessions? I'm a little lost right now myself. It becomes a constant game of tag between what I can obsess(Chase) over next,(Which is a Tom Anderson-Thanks Steve  ), and my wallet. I am learning it is cheaper to chase than it is to catch.
