was the string breaking at the tuning post? did all 3 strings break at the same spot?

The rattling could be a brace coming loose one the inside ( had 1 that did that ) but I hope thats not it - Jim

As for the rattle, I find this issue on a lot of acoustic guitars: Check the tuning pegs and make sure their nuts are tight. When loose, the washers and nuts can rattle quite a bit.
