Here is a screen shot of Adam's Super bass/ Super Lead.
Has anyone tried this on there's to see if it gets that Undertow tone?
I thought the volume on these had to be maxed to get that power tube push aka crunch ala Jones.

His rig is a bit of a mystery, but his board has a micro amp and a GEQ pedal, either or both of which also might be boosting the front of the amp a little bit, I think.

modded amp too, not sure who done it. it's a well kept mystery.

Unless Dave Friedman's part of the conspiracy, he's posted that it's just a late 70s Superbass converted essentially to Superlead spec.

Edit: there's talk in here about that amp

I've seen that thread, it's not a late 70's its a 74 or 75.
After 75 Marshall used plastic switches for the stand by and power.

I don't think his amp has a mod to push out more gain than a stock SL.
I think Friedman is correct on the specs.

His tolex/case for the Super bass is not the original, you can see how it cuts off the JMP in the corner and the tops of Mids, bass, ect.
He at one time ran 2, the other was a late 70's Super bass.

Anyway, the MXR micro amp does boost a bit and the JB helps too.

Once I have one I will share :D

Tone is in the fingers as much as the gear...
If you play on 20 Marshall amps from that same year / same model every one of them is going to sound different.

I'm not a Jones tone chaser. I think it's possible it's just set up for cleanish crunch for that marshall clarity and snarl. Then he adds a high gainer crusher to the mix this gives him crushing low end, and running the Marshall adds all the clarity and openness to his tone. Other guitarist I like do this in the studio for better tone.

The bass player is the biggest tone secret in that band IMO most crushing how it intertwines with the guitar tone. Then drums the whole band works so well with each other.

I built a Metro clone to the specs Dave mentioned.
It sounds pretty much like what you hear on Undertow with the knobs set fairly close to what you see in the photo.
Those specs are basically a stock JMP for the most part.
Nothing special.

He's just using that amp to blend with the VH4. Both amps are always on (no switching). There is no master volume and notice how it is set up.....mids cranked, no bass. He not going after too much thrash with this but an overall stage presence. Nothing in his rig is boosted. The Microamp pedal is in his board loop with the Boss DD3 and BF2. Since they suck a bit of volume, he uses the Micro to get the loop level right.

Adam is a genius. He puts post it notes on a dummy amp to lead people astray like EVH.

10 years from now people will realize he was using a stock Twin Reverb and a Tube Sceamer.

That would be grounds for murder.... :D

Yeah. He mentioned that someone's had their hands in it, but he never says who it was or what was done. I remember reading that the channels were wired together internally, but it looks like there's a jumper cable in the inputs. I like his Diezel tone, but prefer when he was using just the Dual Rectifier and Marshall.

Look at the pic, he externally jumping the inputs and using both volumes. The only mod done to the amp was converting it from a Super Bass to a Super Lead.

I've heard a stock 74 pull it off.
I just need to sell the Herbert to come up with the cash

Correct. From what I've read (and from what I hear after building a few Marshalls), it's basically a stock JMP. Things like additional caps in the V1 and V2 or a different NFB circuit don't qualify as "mods" to me. Because different years of Marshalls had different specs in these areas. And they are easily changed to personalize and tailor the sound of the amp to your liking. Any old stock JMP Lead Spec. can pull off Tool tone. Just crank the mids, zero bass, and jump the channels. You'll get a LOT of bass back in the sound when you jump channels and turn up the Normal Volume. With a 4x12 loaded with Greenbacks, you'll nail Tool tone all day long.

Pretty much! :)

So if he is blending the Marshall with the Diezel, what are his Diezel settings? The Marshall is set up for mids, is the Diezel set up with the mids scooped?

Once the magic pixie dust ingredients are given - all settings on both his amps - I still don't think it'll get anywhere near his tone if tried at home. He's got an eclectic mixture of stomps, he's got his own style, everything. I've managed to cop something close to it (only because I was playing Tool covers, not because I was destined to get the Jonez Tonez) with my Axe-II, but that was last year, and I haven't bothered to refine it from there. But seriously, it's an elusive tone and there's a lot to it more so than just amp settings IMHO.
