Adam Jones VH4 tubes

I have read places he uses EL34s and I have read he uses 6L6GCMSTR.
Just wondering if anyone can confirm this. Also what preamps does he use?
I have all original tubes in my VH4 and they are 5 years old.
I think it's time for a retube and since I play lots of Tool and love the tone I would like to go that route

I would be surprised if he used something different then what peter recommends for the pre-amp section. That's a big part of the diezel tone.

Yeah, sounds like shit. EL34s all the way in a VH4 unless you also have a Super Lead you can crank in stereo. Adam's sound is mostly the Marshall. The second amp is just for low-end and high-gain sizzle.

Not worth it. You can get a 70's JMP for about $1800 - $2200. Your Herbert is worth $3,000. You could also get a Ceriatone clone.

I wouldn't trade a Herbert for a JMP. No way. Like mentioned, just get a clone - they're cheap.

As for this and that about Adam's tubes and tone. You'll never match it. Even if you manage to get all the glass in all the right sockets, you then have to contend with his pedalboard and all the candy he's stomping his signal through. Then comes the actual "touch" of how he plays. Then comes the engineering and production from what happens in the recording room to what gets pressed into a CD.

Listen to the Mo man A big part of Adam's sound is definitely also the band around him, as is true for every member of Tool. His tone solo is actually pretty underwhelming compared to what you would expect, if the bass wasn't so brutal and all the way down low making space for the guitar, you probably wouldn't hear him much.

Like I said in the other thread, combining FL+RL cabs with a new vh4 should get you satisfyingly close in a still manageable rig... word from the source.

I actually think it's the opposite. Justin's tone is pretty bright and Adam's is dark. Plus Adam mics his cabs in such a way that causes some crazy phasing. That's part of the sound, too.
