Adjusting Truss On Charvel US Models

I'm embarrassed to admit that I didn't realize where the truss spoke was until after I bought the guitar. I might not have taken it home if I'd realized I had to take the neck off to adjust the relief. That said, are you guys taking the strings off to do this or just taping them down before popping the neck?

I'm not sure I need to remove relief but I'm considering it. The action has risen a smidge due to some movement that resulted in more relief. I'm figuring I may take the easy way out and just lower the bridge. The relief actually looks OK now. It was probably too straight before.

Anyway, was just wondering about my question above.

Thanks.

Dave

I just loosen the strings a lot, with the guitar on my lap I just unscrew the bolts swing the neck down to the side give the truss rod screw a little turn and put it back together. Tune it up and check. Takes less then 10 minutes. Both models I had benefited from a little tightening.

I have adjusted the heel on my Charvels at setup, and have not touched them since. However, if further adjustments have to be made, you can just slack the strings and pop the neck off.
A vintage neck is part of what makes Charvel a Charvel.

Just loosen the strings and my three have also been pretty stable, one adjustment even for the one I have had for 3 years.

+1000 to this!

Thanks guys. Looks like I have something to do tonight.

Tape the strings to the board, pull the springs out of the floyd, take the neck off, adjust, put neck on, put springs back in.

I always thought it would be a good idea to have threaded inserts in the neck, so that you could bolt/unbolt the neck as many times as you like, without having to worry about the screws wearing out the holes over time.

I'm sure i saw that feature on a Custom Shop Charvel before?

I believe the inserts will loosen over time bro, if you are hard on your guitar I will bet they will fail. I have seen inserts fail more than good wood screws direct into the wood. As long as you do not over crank when putting the neck back on you should be ok.

Fuck if you're going to put the truss rod at the heel at least cut a small notch on the top so you don't need to take the neck off like some models I see.

Honestly, I don't see the need for inserts. I have guitars that have not had the necks off for years once I got them set up the way I liked.

If you are having to pull the neck off frequently, your set up skills need improvement, or there are other issues at work.

My TMZ Charvel has not had an adjustment in over two years, and the action is still where I set it.

That's what I did on the guitar I built. I may mod my Charvel that way as well.
