I like going to auctions, especially ones out in rural areas. You never know what you will find. Yesterday, I went and saw this thing sitting there. I got there pretty late so I wasn't even sure what it was, but when it came on the block and the bid was $5, I figured what the hell and bought it.

I got it home and started doing a little research and, there's not much. But basically, this is a very early battery powered portable PA. It was made sometime in the early 70's and ran on battery power on these little rechargable battery packs in pic related. That's about all I can find. I'm not going to even attempt to charge up a 60 year old battery pack so...

So I am thinking man this sucks, maybe I can find someone to off this hunk of junk to for $10 to double my money. I hear something rattling around in the back, and I open up the casing and find...a vintage Shure mic..it's a pre-sm57 1960's Shure/Unadyne III 545L. It looked into it, it's kind of a rarer version that has a 1/4 input that you can use a 1/4 to XLR adapter for. Apparently it did come with one originally. Pretty cool find. Now I just need to find what to do with that creepy PA.

Hey Brother B,

If you can find out what the power requirements of the PA are I'm bettin' you'd be able to hook it up to a transformer.

It does have a regular 115 as seen in the picture. If I even try to hook this thing up, I'm going to take the battery out first. I doubt it holds charge anymore but...yeah. Part of me just wants to take it apart and look at the insides! Or, I'll find someone around here that likes to tinker and give it to them. I am just pumped about the mic, seems like a lot of guys are really into them.

Yeah, definitely hang onto the mic, man. You've just added a new colour to your palette for $5.

As for the PA combo, when I see things like that I automatically think of someone making a Kemper Profile of it. Great way to archive it, then you can ditch it and move on.

A bonus about the Kemper-Profile thing is that clicks, pops, hiss and hum present in that combo would magically disappear, making it sound brand-new and in this case, probably quieter than it was off-the-shelf.

That's a good idea Nicky!! Maybe I can find someone with a Kemper that would be interested in it around here.....hmmm...
