PQ-3.....In the FX loop or out front?

This is on my Aldrich mod. Can't make my mind up. In the loop, no hush or gate needed. Up front, it is a little noisy, but can be knocked out.

Depends on what you want to do but Most people used the PQ3 as a boost in front of the amp. That's the way Doug used to use it and that's how Stryper, me and a whole bunch of others used it lol. With that said, the concept behind it was to pick the freequencies that you wanted to boost, gun the level and you have instant HOT rod from hell tone but the downside is that you will need a hush. I wouldn't even think about running one that way without it. Its a ton of fun to play around with and can be addicting lol.

oh, also to note ....use the low i/p and o/p for maximum effect. It makes a HUGE difference.

Here is a clip of the Pq3 in front of a Boogie MKIV with the mids boosted at 800hz

I used to run the PQ3 in front of 78 Marshall MarkII Master Lead 100w. I used the Low Input on the Marshall, used lo in/out (like Gainfreak)on the Furman and pushed in the preamp/gain button on the PQ3. Boosted around 500-800hz narrow bandwith and crank all the bands(I can't remember what the settings were on the other bands it was 1984), ran the preamp gain on the PQ3 around 6 or 7. If I had the unit in front of me or a good pic I could tell you in an instant.

Definitely needs a gate. Run the head CLEAN and use the PQ3 as the distortion. Instant Stryper, Icon, etc.

I have used it after a JMP1 preamp in a rack rig as a tone shaper and it worked great too...but nothing like using it as a boost :)

Hey Mark ...,

How would you do this in the Axe-Fx ? Seems like it'd work the same way and be "uber" cool in front of a Plexi ? No ?

Ive done that with the Axe-Fx and it works just fine although at the end of the day, you can get the same sound by running a Filter module in the axe before the amp sim. You can search Marks video for a LeTekro video that he did and its pretty spot on to the effect that you would get by running the Furman before the axe-fx. In other words, you don't have to bother with the PQ3 because you can do it internally within the axe and save yourself the hassle.

Hope this helps.

GF ...,

I wasn't talking about patching an actual PQ-3 ahead of the Axe ..., I was talking about doing it internally. Sorry about the confusion ....

Anyway, I've got Mark's LeTekro patch. In that patch, I believe he set up the PEQ's after the Amp and possibly even after the cab ..., I'll have to check when I get home ? But I guess I didn't realize it's the same thing ... ?

But you're saying that it's the same as running the PEQ before the Amp ?

Cool ! THANKS ....

oops!!! My Bad!!

Im not sure how Mark setup his LeTekro Patch but when I had an Axe-Fx I used to use a Filter before the amp using the same concept that I used to use when using the PQ3. I used to use a Parametric EQ sim before the amp module but I settled on a Filter because it was easier to use and the end result was pretty much the same. I say that you should experiment and Im sure that you will have a blast!

With all that said, The end result should sound similar to the patch that mark made although it will be ganier if you hit/increase the level on the Filter

I have a drive, filter and PEQ block before the amp block on the Le Tekro preset. The thing about the Furman PQ3 is it had this crazy smooth gain when you hit the little preamp/gain button....nothing quite like it.

The AxeFx preset I made kind of simulates what would happen with a PQ3.

I left it in the loop and fiddled with it and the amp's EQ. Its an old green face one and shit, I didn't know what I had been missing. These PQ's really pull the covers off of a Marshall. Think I will leave it there instead of trying it up front. I definitely don't want to hit the front end with any more gain. Sweet piece of gear. Thanks for the tips.

Here is a YouTube clip of my JCM 800 & Furman PQ 3 boosting the low input of the amp, and hooked up via the low input/output on the furman.

I love the PQ3

However, beware of the strong power of the PQ3, that will influence the user to........grow a mullet, wear ZubaZ pants and pull out that old Dokken on cassette tape again.

Just bought a TC 2240 for dirt cheap in mint condition... I am very interested to get back and try it with a few marshall amps!
