Im looking at replacing a SD Alnico Pro II in a LP...

I like to get most of my overdriven tones from my amp, and want a good clasic rock and hard rock sound

I have other Les Paul with:

Suhr Aldrich bridge,
EMG 81
BKP Mules which are PAF replicas in the bridge

Im looking for something like a hot PAF, somewhere middle down the road soundwise, kind of like a Paf on Steroids...

I had my eye particularly on BKP: the Rebel Yells, Crawlers, Emeralds, Black Dogs and WCR American Steele set. The guitar is pretty bright if that helps

Thanks!!

Duncan Custom or Custom 5.
Definitely the Custom 5, but I think the Custom Custom would be closer than the reg Custom

Custom Custom sounds like a REALLY hot Alnico 2 Pro, IMO.

The midrange is SOOO broad, it makes my preamps overdrive MUCH earlier than most pickups..

I wouldn't recommend it for a "PAF-ey" tone.

this is what im thinking. i too like the PAF hot tone and the OP has posted most of the pickups i see

the only one i have not seen mentioned is the wolfgang pickup. that is designed around a hot PAF

another idea is to take the dimarzio super distortion pickup and swap the magnet for an alnico V or VIII which the 5 is supposed to be close to the wolfgang from what i hear.

No shit? I've got a Super Distortion lying around doing nothing. Any idea where I can buy replacement magnets that will fit it?

If you read the info on the Duncan site, the Custom was originally designed to be a hot PAF. I've owned the C, CC & C5. The C and C5 are the more PAF sounding of the three. The CC is just another animal all together.

I've only only heard the CC in one guitar and it definitely had a "hot PAF" thing going for it...I'll defer to others who have more experience with it though. I don't consider the regular Custom to be near as PAF-like as some others though and I have a lot of experience with it. There are many better choices IMO.

Thanks Guys, I am particulary interested in BKP, I loved each one I heard so much, I am kind of a loyal fan you know....

I want one that is not high output since I got those tones covered, but that is not a PAF. Kind of in the middle of the road. I was offered a Rebel Yell and Emerald set. Has anybody got to try them, or any other BKP like the riff raff, black dog or crawler....

Thanks!

it's been at least 4 years since i performed my own, little pup shoot out,....i think someone should try all kinds of different pups (same guitar, amp, cord, pick, time of day,temp,etc...) maybe we could all let the tester use some of our different pups,..i would be willing to let a trusted formite with no,..or very little ties to ill~repute burrow a pup!,...anyone else thinks it's a good/viable idea??

As mentioned in the other thread - the RR's are incredible pups offering the typical vintage style output... Emeralds are a bit hotter. RY's are way hotter. I'd say RR's first and Emeralds 2nd.

Peace,
V.

Dimarzio once recommended a Breed Neck pup as a great "hot" PAF in the bridge position. I never tried it though...

I'd highly recommend the Wolfgang pickup though. It is incredibly nice.

Keep in mind, how is the FEEL of the pickups.
For me this the most important factor.
What's crazy is some pickups may be higher in output
but don't sound like it.
