Most Hughes & Kettner tone issues can be resolved with modifications to the input structure.
English translation: If you play like shit, it will sound like shit.
All my Hughes & Kettner amps sound awesome. Mind you, they don't sound like a Marshall, but they have great tone. Just a different beast.

Race, talking to his motorcycle mechanic:
Race: I'm thinking of having you put a slipper clutch in the ZX-6R. I'm getting some rear wheel chatter on high-RPM downshifts for corner entry.
Race's Tech: Well, I find that most problems of that nature can be rectified by alterations to the different rider-vehicle inputs.
<pause>
Race: So you're saying I ride like shit?
Race's Tech: Exactly
