This interesting video discusses variability in human intelligence and its consequences. Ten percent of the population is so stupid they can't be trained to be useful even in the army as a grunt. That's just the worst cases - it's a spectrum of course. This helps explain why there are so many stupid statements on social media. A huge proportion of the population (greater than 10%) are pretty stupid. That's the reality.
With the advent of the internet and the availability of public forums, low intelligence people then have an avenue to disseminate their opinions within the pubic domain. Those opinions then attract support from other stupid people that haven't got the brain power to discern what is rubbish versus what is reasonable.
All that sounds rather distasteful but there would be at least a fair amount of truth to that.
