all you plexi guys out there, whats your favorite modern preamp tubes?

let the tube wars begin,  I like JJ's, but remember, no 2 Marshalls sound alike, so what sounds good to me in mine, may not sound as good in yours.

SED EL34's and NOS tubes sound great in that amp. In a pinch C9's are good.

C9's Tung-Sols and Sovtek 12AX7 LPS.

I Fing HATE JJ preamp tubes (and power tubes). The 803's sound better than the 83's, but they both sound like crap vs everything else. I only keep JJ tubes around so I can put them in amps that I sell.
must be the amp :D here is one of mine with JJ's

I've had JJ ecc83 that sounded good but the ecc803 one that I bought didnt sound good in my Marshall, but it could have just been that tube I suppose. For modern , I like Tung Sol, Chinese and JJ.

Me too! LOL! :D
But my Splawn LOVES them and only them!

I'm with Dave...hate JJ's. Chinese work fine for me. I do have some old Mullards that sound good too...

my jmp hates jjs, but loves the mullard clones, both new sensor and gt.
also, the long plate jj sounded really good in there.
current
new sensor mullard in v1,
gold pin ei in v2,
gt mullard in v3

mine currently has a cascading gain mod on v1, and both the post and pre master vols ganged together and produces some insane gain but still lets me dial down for the sweet spot.
I am also running svet 6550's biased at 52.5
I have found that those amps react to the bias on the power tubes much more than later models, and it REALLY effects the tone. for me, 4.5 clicks over may burn out the tubes a bit quicker, but it really kills in the tone department, even kt77s and el34s in those amps just sound better hotter to my ears.

I hate JJ's too. I like C9's mixed with EH. I haven't tried any of the Sovtek LPS's for a long time, since the 5 I bought only lasted about 2 hours. I need to try them again. (That was about 6 years ago when they first came out, so I'm sure they've improved since then.)

Overall, I prefer a mix of NOS and C9's.

Same for me...

I know why all you guys hate the JJs.

Your hearing in the top end is LOOOOOOOOOOOONG gone from blasting those Marshalls and the JJs sound darker then chinese or LPS so the end result is that they sound flat to your ears.

My Marshalls are loaded with NOS stuff though.

What? Speakup, I can't hear you.

FWIW -
I hated JJ's in my 5150 and Revolution 1.
5150 loves Ruby and the Rev is best with Tung-Sols in the Krank channel and Penta Labs in the Kleen.

i been playing gt mullard reis lately, but just ordered some chinese to try..

Good old stuff: Amperex holland v1, tungsram v2, tesla e83cc in the PI. Those dutch made pre's can be a bit much in an overly bright amp but their attack and detail is world class imo. Great harmonics.

New stuff: Tung sol RI in v1, whatever sounds good and takes the cathode follower in v2, and an ei or sovtek lps in v3.

One of these days I'm gonna have to put together another good marshall, I've got an oei OT collecting dust that is just begging to be wailed on.
