...such as Celestion blues, golds ? Any thoughts ? Come to think of it, weren't the Altec speakers Randy Rhoads used Alnico ?

And by high gain I mean modded Marshall territory, not Recto/über modern tones.

i have a set of the golds, i like them. i dont really run a standard sound though, its sort of a modern tone with lower gain levels. i like the combination of modern heads with the alnico speakers. that might not help you though, lol

In my experience the higher wattage alnico speakers do well for high gain. Like an EV SRO alnico speaker. So something like that (altec, WGS blackbird, etc) would likely work well. I don't think the 15watt Alnico blue is a great high gain speaker though.

Also, steer clear of Jensen and Jensen style alnicos, they are usually on the fizzy side with gain.

Eric Johnson's new speaker might be worth checking out. 50 watt alnico.

I've got a pair of 50 watt wizard alnico's....they are taking forever to break in. Not sure I can be of much help yet. They are in a 2-12 right now, may swap them over to a 4-12 to see what happens. With my Hiwatt the sound great though.

Exactly, 417-8c or 8h or both.

I have an 417-8c running in a closed 112. It is not that defined and clear sounding as playing the ceramic celestion, etc. stuff we are used to today. But this box delivers exactly that real nice vintage ozzy vibe. It's fun
