...book or website that I can pickup/read to learn more on amp building/modding? Such as how to read schematics and just overall knowledge on working on amps and such. I really want to start doing something on the side with stuff like this, sort of like Olaf and whatnot at some point. Yes I know about the Egnater Amp Building Seminar, but that is both out of my price range and I don't know of when that will ever take place again. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

There is a ton of great free info at:
http://www.aikenamps.com/
Check out the tech info as well as some great bibliography recommendations.

KOC's TUT1 is also a good start http://www.londonpower.com/

Another idea might be to take a night class such as, "Introduction to Electronics" at your local college. That will give you the basics you'll need.

Cheers,
Mike

I have some awesome electronic textbooks from the 40s and 50s that have some cool tube info... Gerald Weber's books aren't bad, along with the stuff everyone else has mentioned.

I got a question about all this too (sorry to hijack). How much would it cost to make a small 1x12 high gain combo, and then how much for a 2x12 combo, solid state? Thanks

As little or as much is reasonable for your circumstances. If you're reusing parts from something else or have a lot of materials, possibly not much at all. To buy everything it also may not cost too much especially if you're being cheap about it. But you can always spend more money on just about any particular piece of the puzzle. And you'll be spending a lot of time on it especially if you've never done it before.

If all you're doing is trying to save a buck by making your own amp, I'd recommend buying a used amp or finding a sale on the amp you want instead. :)

Whatever James, all he needs is a street sign, some flammable materials, exposed fuses and used tubes. :D

Don't forget the gold metal-flake spray paint.

Thanks for the info, I always thought it'd be a cool idea to make you own amp. Show up to a buddies house or playing a gig with an amp everyone wants to know about. I wanted solid state because I know I'd screw up tube stuff, and just wanted to know how much I should put aside in the future if I decide to build one
